There is an over-the-counter weight loss program known as Alli, or by its former prescription-only name, Orlistat. Their marketing claims that you can lose more weight with it than by diet alone. It works by causing foods to pass quickly through your digestive system, claiming that 25% of the fat you eat will not get absorbed.

In other words, and in actuality, it may cause diarrhea. Some say the explosive kind. It also costs about $60 per month.

According to the Nutrition Action Newsletter from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Alli/Orlistat has been tested in 22 research studies, finding that overweight people (mainly women) lost an average of 6 extra pounds with it per year compared with a placebo.

Alli may be what you need, or may be not. I’ll leave that to you and your doctor to decide. For me, I can’t stand to have diarrhea, gas pains, or stomach trouble. This wouldn’t be for me. Six extra pounds in a years time, along with difficult dieting, just isn’t enough. Furthermore, how would explosive diarrhea teach me to keep the weight off?

Have YOU tried Alli? Tell us in a comment, please, about what you experienced and what you think of it.
