Yes, it’s great to want to be as pure and healthy as possible by buying and eating organic foods.  But if you’re trying to lose weight and save money and like me, I can’t really afford to go organic.

My wife buys organic milk, for example.  A half-gallon costs $5.15!  Yikes!  A half-gallon of regular, non hormonal, is 1/3 that price.  She says “but it’s organic;” I say, “yeah, but it’s also ultra pasteurized for very long shelf life, from a farm in the upper Midwest that has giant herds of cattle fed “organic” pellets.  I read about it in Michael Pollan’s books.  Yes, I agree it’s better to not be consuming hormones like BHT, etc., but the regular milk doesn’t contain them.

It pays to read the label and get educated, I say.  “Organic” has become just another buzz word.   Yes, there’s truth in not eating pesticides, I agree.  So occasionally I do want some organic foods, and ultimately, in the long-run I want to raise my own foods myself on my own farm, and only eat organic, natural foods.  Someday.

Right now, though, I can’t afford it, and I want to keep my weight in check.  So it’s about being conscious and buying the best foods, washing them thoroughly before we eat them, and saving money.

What do you think (and feel) about “organic.”  Write a post!
