Going through old boxes, I stumbled on a 33 rpm recording of this TV special from way-back-when: “Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.” I have fond memories of hearing it on my parents’ big boxy wooden stereo in our living room when I was growing up. I decided to dig around and, lo and behold, found several samplings from it on YouTube.

Remember when two gifted young people could sit in front of a microphone for 10 minutes and just, you know, sing?  Maybe more amazing:  this special was produced in 1962, before either of these gals had made a big splash in TV or the movies; they were known for their work on Broadway — a relatively small niche. But CBS thought enough of these two to give them an hour of prime time to sing at Carnegie Hall. Would anyone at the broadcast networks attempt anything like this today? I doubt it.

Take a few moments and enjoy this treasure from a time capsule. Nearly 50 years after it first aired, it’s still just great.
