Here’s something you certainly don’t see every day, from the Pontifical High Mass celebrated last weekend in Washington. 

 
Not everyone loved it. One commenter at U.S. Catholic magazine called it “a ridiculous mountain of red silk,” and added:

It’s one thing to seek the mystery presumably embodied in ancient forms, but I hardly see how frippery of this magnitude glorifies God, who has no need of such things. In fact, when sackcloth should be the defining couture, silk is a stumbling block and an obstacle to the proclamation of the gospel. If anything, the sex abuse crisis is a call to a renewed humility.

Personally, I’m not a fan, though I can understand why people might disagree.  I suppose it’s a matter of taste.  For me, the cappa’s not my cuppa.
