Beloved gospel singer Guy Penrod is opening up about a serious health diagnosis, revealing that he may need a bone marrow transplant while asking fans to join him in prayer.

The former Gaither Vocal Band singer shared the news during an emotional appearance on the #JustWhenever podcast with longtime friend and former bandmate Mark Lowry. Although Penrod did not disclose the specific name of his condition, he explained that the diagnosis had caused him and his wife to reconsider their priorities and appreciate life’s precious moments.

“We are dealing with a bit of a medical issue with me,” Penrod revealed. “I haven’t told anyone yet. It just caused us a pause to think about things.”

When Lowry asked what God had been teaching him through the experience, Penrod pointed to James 4:14, which compares human life to a mist that appears briefly before disappearing.

“Life is but a vapor; it’s here for a little while and vanishes away,” he said.

The singer explained that his diagnosis has reminded him of the importance of letting go of resentment, slowing down, and making the most of each day.

“Don’t hold a grudge,” Penrod advised, adding that he and his wife have “tried to slow some things down and be intentional.”

As the conversation continued, Lowry asked how viewers could pray for him. Penrod acknowledged that his condition is serious and described it as an illness involving the blood and bone marrow.

“There’s only one potential fix for it, and it’s a bone marrow transplant,” he explained.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his health, Penrod emphasized that he isn’t allowing fear to control his outlook.

He said he was not “freaked out” by the diagnosis and didn’t want to cast a “net of fear” over others.

“I know there are diagnoses all up and down that list and problems and difficulties that folks have dealt with. So, I’m no different than anyone else in that regard,” he said.

Instead, Penrod is leaning on his Christian faith and the support of fellow believers.

“We all serve the same God,” he reminded viewers, expressing hope that a “team of warriors like you” would bring his name before God in prayer.

The conversation ended with an emotional prayer from Lowry, who asked God to bring healing and guide the medical professionals caring for his friend.

“Lord, you know more than the doctors do about his situation. And nothing ever takes you by surprise,” Lowry prayed.

“Father, will you touch your son and heal him from the top of his head to the sole of his feet?”

Penrod then turned the focus away from himself, offering a heartfelt prayer for viewers facing their own struggles.

“Father, may your spirit encourage, uplift, heal, deliver, strengthen, [and] provide all the needs that are represented here,” he prayed.

For Penrod, the diagnosis has brought uncertainty, but it has also strengthened his appreciation for faith, family, and the gift of each day.

As he faces the road ahead, the gospel music favorite is asking fellow Christians to remember him in prayer while continuing to trust God through whatever comes next.
