New York Giants co-owner, CEO, and president John Mara revealed Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer, asking for privacy as he undergoes treatment.
The 70-year-old executive, who has been part of the Giants organization for more than three decades, issued a heartfelt statement on social media.
“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara shared. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally and medically.”
Mara’s announcement quickly drew messages of support from across the NFL, with many expressing admiration for his steady leadership and lifelong commitment to the Giants.
Mara’s life has been deeply intertwined with the Giants. His grandfather, Tim Mara, founded the franchise in 1925. After Tim’s passing in 1959, Wellington and Jack Mara took over ownership, cementing the family’s place in NFL history. John Mara joined the team officially in 1991 as general counsel before rising to executive vice president, chief operating officer, and ultimately co-owner and president.
Under his leadership, alongside co-owner Steve Tisch, the Giants won two Super Bowls—both led by quarterback Eli Manning over the New England Patriots. These victories in 2007 and 2011 further established Mara’s reputation as a steady, behind-the-scenes leader who values tradition, family, and perseverance.
Mara emphasized in his statement that he plans to remain actively involved with the team during his treatment. His confidence and determination reflect the same qualities that have defined his decades of leadership.
The announcement comes as the Giants are navigating challenges on and off the field. For many fans, Mara’s willingness to share his personal battle is both sobering and inspiring, reminding them that faith, family, and perseverance remain at the heart of life’s trials.
As he undergoes treatment, Mara’s faith and optimism will undoubtedly sustain him. The Giants’ community and countless fans across the league are rallying in prayer for his healing.
