Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shocked fans this week by revealing that he secretly fought — and ultimately overcame — stage 4 melanoma over 10 years.
The 82-year-old shared the news on Tuesday while speaking to reporters, confirming that he is now cancer-free after undergoing four major surgeries and participating in an experimental drug trial.
“I now have no tumors,” Jones told the Dallas Morning News. “I was saved by a fabulous treatment, great doctors, and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy].”
Jones explained that his diagnosis came in 2010, setting off a long and grueling medical journey. He endured two surgeries on his lungs and two on his lymph nodes while undergoing the groundbreaking PD-1 immunotherapy treatment, which helps the body’s immune system target and kill cancer cells.
“I went into trials for that PD-1, and it has been one of the great medicines,” Jones said.
The billionaire owner’s cancer story became public after he referenced his treatments during interviews for Netflix’s upcoming docuseries America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys. The fifth episode touches on his relationship with former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson, and in one moment, Jones shared advice a physician once gave him:
“You need to do a lot of meditation. Make a list of 10 people who can just boil your blood. Start with the one at the top and wish for them the greatest things you can wish for. At No. 1, I wrote down the name ‘Jimmy Johnson.'”
Despite his health struggles, Jones has remained at the helm of one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world. He is preparing for the 2025 NFL season, with the Cowboys set to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the league’s season opener on September 4.
