Religion is like living in your parents’ house. It’s safe – You’re protected from the unknown. It’s easy – Mom sets the table and makes your dinner. It’s comfortable – The house is nice and the rent is low. It’s predictable – The rules are clear. And it’s always there – All you have to do is show up.

Spirituality is like moving out on your own. It’s scary – The safety net has been removed. It’s hard – Dinner is on your own. It’s uncomfortable – Usually a shabby apartment with a demanding landlord. It’s uncertain – There are no rules and each day brings something new. And just showing up is not enough – Without effort, you may be evicted.

The comfort of your parents’ home is appealing, but once you’re out . . .
