Powerful stories can move our hearts to laughter or tears. Compelling arguments can alter our conclusions about an issue or topic. Regardless of the context, we know storytelling can influence our lives.
But the most powerful stories are God stories—personal accounts that shine a light on God’s miraculous intervention in the world. Based on my 25 years as a Christian journalist, I’m convinced that stories and testimonies have the power to change lives, and God can use the stories to ignite faith and restore weakened faith.
I’ve had the privilege of speaking with many inspiring people to hear how God has transformed their lives, from former atheist professors to heavy-metal satanists, God has a way of breaking through hearts of stone and producing hearts of flesh.
Their stories reveal God’s character—he is infinitely creative in the way he draws people to himself, as his lovingkindness leads broken people to repentance.
Through my work, I have seen a few commonalities that I want you to consider, especially as you think of your own personal story and how you might use it to influence others.
1. Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone’s story is unique.
If you are a follower of Christ, you are part of God’s redemptive plan for humanity, and he is calling you to be his witness. You don’t have to have the specialized training of an attorney or prosecutor to defend or prove a case, or a judge to decide a case.
A witness merely shares what happened to them. God takes it from there. He can use your story, along with the power of the Word and the Spirit to bring amazing breakthroughs in other people’s lives.
You might think your story is not significant or very dramatic, but God can use it nevertheless. If you are a Christian, you have an experience about coming to know Jesus, how you once lived and how you live now. The fact that you have been changed by his grace, love, and truth is worth sharing.
2. Sharing your story enhances fellowship.
Sharing your story connects you with other people. We are not meant to live in isolation, a truth many learned the hard way during Covid. We were created to be in community, which means sharing in each other’s sorrows and burdens, triumphs and victories. God’s design for humanity centers around connection to a family of other believers.
3. God uses our stories to inspire others.
God can use your experience to shape someone else’s story.
When Jesus walked the earth, he would often use storytelling to gain the attention of his followers. Through parables like “The Lost Sheep” or “The Prodigal Son,” Jesus used familiar imagery from their life experiences to communicate lessons that would echo in their hearts.
Your story may evoke themes that resonate with others and lead to breakthroughs for them. So don’t withhold the unique testimony God has given you, share it!
4. God can use you and your story to touch the most unlikely people.
In my book, When Kingdom Light Shines, I tell the story of Kirk Martin, a victim of sexual assault at a young age, a tragic incident that took place within the walls of the church, which caused him to turn away from God and pursue a life of defiance and rebellion.
His life was marked by fights, drugs, alcohol and homelessness. Because of the abuse within the church, he believed that God never loved him, and that God was to blame for every bad thing that happened in his life.
Martin joined a heavy metal band and made a pact with the devil. He was determined to “twist as many young people” as he could get his hands on and “send people to hell with music.”
But God’s great love pursued Martin, and God used an unlikely messenger who would proclaim a message of hope to him in his lowest moment. After a personal encounter with God, Martin’s life was transformed.
Martin is just one example of how God can bring light into the darkest recesses of the human heart, and he can use you as his messenger of light.
5. Your story can become a powerful tool in the hands of a powerful God.
Your story is the most meaningful way of connecting with others and your most powerful way of pointing them to Christ. Our stories come in all shapes and sizes—from intensely personal struggles to spiritual breakthroughs involving God’s grace. Be ready to share the unique story God has given you. You never know how transformative your testimony can be to those around you.
For those questioning God’s existence and presence in their life, your testimony can open a door and inspire faith – but know that God is the only one who can penetrate their heart.
Therefore, be ready. Look for moments where you can share your unique faith story with someone in need of encouragement. You have a beautiful, distinctive story to tell. So, share it with the world!
