A new poll has revealed that belief in Jesus’s virgin birth has hit an all-time low. The report from the American Bible Society explored Americans’ supernatural beliefs, with 62% of U.S. adults believing in the supernatural. The report surveyed 2,649 U.S. adults from January 8 to the 27th and explored their adherence to a number of supernatural events and beings.
The survey looked at beliefs in supernatural beings such as God, Satan, angels, and demons. Overall, 68% said they believed in God, while 55% believed in Satan. 64% believed in angels, while 51% believed in demons. The survey also found that 62% of respondents believed in Heaven while 53% believed in Hell. Belief was found to be higher amongst older individuals than younger, with 57% of Gen Z believing in God while 75% of boomers and older did. Women were also more likely to believe in God (68%) than men (55%).
The study also looked at belief in biblical miracles such as the parting of the Red Sea as described in the book of Exodus, the Resurrection of Jesus, and the virgin birth. Fifty-three percent believed that the Resurrection of Jesus probably or definitely happened, while 49% said the same of the virgin birth, and 44% said so of the parting of the Red Sea. Not unsurprisingly, those who identified as religious were more likely to believe in the supernatural events of the Bible, with 90% of evangelicals believing in the resurrection. Sixty-seven percent of Catholics believed in an actual resurrection while 61% of mainline Protestants did.
Regarding the effectiveness of prayer, 48% expressed some belief in answered prayer while 19% strongly disagreed. Forty-four percent expressed some belief in healing while 27% believed in spiritual attacks. Once again, beliefs in these were highest amongst practicing Christians over those who didn’t practice or stated they did not believe. The overall results of the study, according to Dr. John Farquhar Plake, American Bible Society’s Chief Innovation Officer and editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible, pointed to the need for the Bible to explain people’s general belief in the supernatural. “Most of our neighbors sense that our lives are more than a material existence. They have a sense of the supernatural and are seeking answers to their questions in diverse ways, whether that means engaging in mainstream religious practices or diverging from them,” he said. “The Bible helps us understand how the natural world and the supernatural world are connected, and it’s our responsibility to help our fellow Americans open the Bible and experience a life-changing encounter with God.”
