In Nairobi, Kenya, a 12-year-old boy knocked on a classroom door, and the teacher motioned for him to come in. He held up a well-worn copy of “The Story of Jesus,” a colorful booklet that presents the gospel to children, and thanked the teacher for sharing the book with his brother, sharing what a difference the book made in his family.

In Oregon, another young boy adds his name to a list of children waiting to check out “The Action Bible” from their school library. According to Hannah Salisbury, founder of Bibles in School, the Bible always has a waiting list. In 2019, Salisbury started Bibles in School after seeing a change in kids who read the Bible. As a former elementary school teacher, she remembered seeing a second-grader who didn’t like reading, flipping through a copy of the King James Bible and loving it.

She thought, if he’s so excited to read this old Bible, what if there was a Bible on his reading level with pictures? Afterward, Salisbury visited the Christian bookstore and found “The Action Storybook Bible.” She asked to donate it to the librarian, and the clerk said, “Sure.” Salisbury thought the process was so easy, so she kept going.

Since then, Bibles in Schools has donated over 10,000 copies of “The Action Bible” to more than 3,000 public school libraries. In homes and schools worldwide, the graphic novel-style drawings in “The Action Bible,” published by David C. Cook, bring the truths and stories in the Bible to life while capturing a child’s attention. “The Action Bible” made Amazon’s number one bestseller in Children’s Comics and number three in Children’s Bibles. Stephanie Bennett, editorial manager at David C. Cook, says the illustrations make “The Action Bible” appealing to all ages.

She said, “Today’s culture is so highly visual, so we need a way to picture what’s going on. It’s such an approachable way to go through the entire Bible that many parents are learning alongside their children as they read. It’s such a visual representation of God’s Word.” Bennett added that the publisher is constantly expanding “The Action Bible” series, adding new videos, products, and ways for kids to experience the Bible. “The Action Bible Easter: 25 Stories about Jesus’ Resurrection,” released in February 2023, is the latest addition to “The Action Bible” series.

“The Action Bible Christmas: 25 Stories about Jesus’ Arrival,” another part of the series, was released in October 2022. Bennett said, “We’re always evolving in our approaches. We don’t want to ever be stagnant in our products. We want to create new things continuously and ways to engage with God’s Word and always point back to God’s Word as the core.”
