The gorgeous blessing I published yesterday turns out to be Irish. That’s not too surprising, is it? And in response to one reader’s question, a lintel is a horizontal structural beam that spans any architectural opening, usually a door. Here and here are some nice old examples. A rooftree is not a pretty tree that hangs over your roof, it’s a beam to which other roof beams attach. Visit here and scroll down to see an old photograph of a church’s rooftree being raised.
