Billionaires give back. Read Story. Add Facebook co-founders  Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz to the list of billionaires who have signed the Giving Pledge, a document put forth by Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffet to encourage fellow billionaires to commit publicly to giving away most of their wealth the charitable causes.

The list includes more than 50 names now, including AOL co-founder Steve Case, financier Carl Icahn, philanthropist Michael Milken, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, Star Wars creator George Lucas and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

That’s, of course, fantastic. True giving, not government confiscation. Chances are these guys will be more wise and innovative about how to invest their own money to help others than the politicians would be.

BTW, I finally caught up with The Social Network, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s film (based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich) about the founding and rise of Facebook. I don’t know how accurate it is but, as drama, it’s fantastic.

From my point of view, Zuckerberg didn’t come off as badly as I had come to expect. As portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, he wasn’t exactly a Boy Scout in his business dealings but not really sinister either. If the movie has a real villain, its probably Justin Timberlake as Napster founder Sean Parker. But, then again, others might disagree.
