We’ve looked at lots of sugars and alternative sweeteners — and now I’m going to tell you something that may surprise you. When it comes right down to it, the best choice is — none of the above.

There is evidence that your autopilot who directs your internal body functions reacts to sweetness by instructing your body to store fat.  There is also evidence that the more sweet things you eat, the more you want to eat. So the better plan is to focus on whole, natural foods. Eat lots of vegetables with some fruit and make sure you have plenty of protein.  Eat sweet things only sparingly.

When you do that, you may find your taste buds changing. They do renew themselves every 10 days, so you have a chance to change them.  When you lay off the sugars, all food will be more tasty.  Fruit, especially, will strike you as sweet and delicious.

So why am I posting dessert recipes?  Mainly because I bought lots of alternative sweeteners in order to write this just-completed series.  I need to get some of it out of my cabinets!  Seriously, I do want you to have good options. When you do have something sweet, make an informed decision and choose the sweetener that is best for you.

Just be careful to make desserts an occasional treat, not a part of your everyday meal plan.

Eating to live and living for Christ,

Susan Jordan Brown
