I especially liked this contribution from John D.:

I’m at a place in recovery that I never quite imagined I would reach. My belief now is that I’m basically a healthy person who sometimes has episodes of depression rather than a chronically depressed person who very rarely has periods of recovery. I’m not sure how that change came about, but it’s fundamental and has led to many other breakthroughs.

1. I removed a major source of stress by retiring from the professional work as a mediator that I’ve done for more than 25 years. Because of depression, it had become agonizing to continue, and as soon as I made that change I felt peacefulness move in and stress diminish drastically.

2. I am now pursuing my first love – writing – in two blogs and also developing an online business. This is the most fulfilling and exciting work Ive done in years, and I’m full of energy in dealing with a busy schedule.

3. I’m able to be much more present with my wife and children and friends. Getting out of the isolation that depression brings with it has reopened the door to close relationships.

4. I’ve been making progress dealing with several physical issues and so feel better in that way.

5. My sense of spiritual purpose has been renewed, as I’ve become so much less preoccupied with self-condemnation. This enables me to sense at precious moments the operation of a spiritual power far beyond my own helping me to communicate with others.

6. Most amazing to me – and it truly feels like the grace of God, I’ve made an internal shift in belief about myself and spiritual life that gives me confidence in this period of recovery. I believe it’s the real thing and will not fade as many others have. An enormous blessing.

It’s still hard to grasp how fortunate I’ve been after so many years – decades – that convinced me I would always be dominated by depression.
