The Creation Museum
7.jpg
Concerned about natural history museums that support evolution, the Christian organization Answers in Genesis recently unveiled a $27-million Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. The museum counters the Big Bang and Darwin's theory with exhibits based on the Bible's book of Genesis.
In this photo, Ken Ham, the museum's creator, stands near an animatronic dinosaur. Creationists believe dinosaurs coexisted with humans for some time, because God created them both on the sixth day of creation.
Two Views of the Origin of Life
13.JPG
A museum placard compares two explanations for the creation of the universe: "Human Reason" vs. "God's Word." On the left, swirls of galaxies are labeled "evolution of the universe." On the right, four images of the planet Earth illustrate the Bible's first four days of creation.
On the Sixth Day, Creeping Things
3.JPG
A boy examines an exhibit of spiders and other insects labeled "creeping things." According to Genesis 1:24-25, on the sixth day of the creation week, God made "cattle and creeping things and beasts." Later that day, God created humans.
Humans and Dinosaurs in Harmony
4.JPG
A large dinosaur towers over the main hall of the Creation Museum. Creationists believe humans and dinosaurs were created on the sixth day and lived together in peace for some time. During this peaceful time, they say, all dinosaurs were herbivores.
Adam and Eve
5.JPG
In this museum exhibit, Adam and Eve stand near the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In Genesis 2:16-17, God commands them not to eat the fruit of this tree. Since the Bible does not specify that the fruit was an apple, the museum uses a cluster of berries. According to Genesis, Eve was tempted by a serpent to eat the fruit of the tree, and gave it to Adam. Two core Christian doctrines--Original Sin and the Fall of Man--refer to this story of disobedience.
Punishment for Sin
6.JPG
After the Fall, God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. In this exhibit, Adam tills a field. According to Genesis 3:16-19, hard work was man's punishment for sin, and the pain of labor was woman's punishment.
Other Consequences of Sin

A placard in an exhibit about the consequences of Adam's sin explains that weeds resulted from the Fall. The "Before Adam's Sin" text reads: "God created a perfect balance in the beginning, as plants produced exactly the amount of food needed by the animals of the earth." The next section, "After Adam's Sin," reads: "Once animals began overproducing to replace the dead and diseased, they would eat too many plants. So God introduced overproduction of plants to replace the plants that would be lost. As a result, plants struggle against other plants for survival [and] plants grow where they are not wanted (weeds)." Nearby placards explain how disease and death also entered the world at this time.
After the Fall, Meat-Eating Dinosaurs
1.JPG
In this exhibit, raptors stalk their prey. Creationists believe that one result of sin entering the world was that some dinosaurs became carnivorous. After Noah's flood, creationists say, God gave humans permission to eat meat (Genesis 9).
The First Homicide

Cain stands over the body of his brother, Abel, whom he has murdered. Genesis 4 says that Cain killed his brother in a jealous rage.
Noah and the Great Flood
9.JPG
In this life-sized exhibit, Noah's son works on the ark. According to Genesis 6, God commanded Noah to construct an ark to contain his family and all the animals in creation so that they could survive a worldwide flood. Some creationists debate the exact dimensions of the ark, which the Bible gives in cubits. Answers in Genesis says "300 cubits is a big ship, not some whimsical houseboat with giraffe necks sticking out the top....The proportions are even more amazing-they are just like a modern cargo ship."
Dinosaurs Board the Ark

In this diorama, dinosaurs and mammals board Noah's Ark. On his Answers in Genesis website, museum founder Ken Ham writes, "Many people think of dinosaurs as large creatures that would never have fit into the Ark. But the average size of a dinosaur (based on the skeletons found over the Earth) is about the size of a sheep. ...Only a few dinosaurs grew to extremely large sizes....it is realistic to assume that God would have sent young adults to the Ark, not fully grown creatures....Noah's Ark was extremely large and quite capable of carrying the number of animals needed, including dinosaurs."
Great Flood Geology

A museum placard explains how fossils were formed by Noah's flood. Creationist organizations such as Answers in Genesis produce research to bolster such claims.
The Tower of Babel

A placard explains how the story of Babel (Genesis 11) led to ethnic and language differences between human groups.
Not Descended from 'Lucy'
evolution_lucy_175.jpg
A museum placard is displayed over a larger image of 'Lucy,' a skeleton evolutionists consider to be a transitional form between humans and ape-like ancestors. The Answers in Genesis website says the museum shows "that Lucy was a knuckle-dragging, ape-like creature that walked upright from time to time (like a modern bonobo chimpanzee). The ape also had curved fingers and toes for climbing trees-no ancestor of ours at all."
The Coming Messiah
messiah_175.jpg
Not all Creation Museum exhibits are focused on Genesis. Other features explain more aspects of the museum's biblical worldview. Here, a placard links Old Testament promises to the coming of Jesus.
The Protestant Reformation
12.JPG
The Creation Museum includes singular moments in Christian history, such as this exhibit of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517. Luther's writing challenged the teachings of the Catholic Church in the areas of indulgences and papal authority. His act of defiance is considered the defining moment of the Protestant Reformation.
The Results of Rejecting God's Word

Taped to a wall in an exhibit about the consequences of rejecting the Bible are newspaper clippings about gay marriage, stem cells, school shootings, and euthanasia.
