The Jesus Prayer
Eastern Orthodox Christians often pray an abbreviated form of the Jesus Prayer in Greek: Kyrie eleison. The words mean, “Lord, have mercy.” Years ago I read the word “mercy” is the English translation of the Greek eleos, an old Greek word for oil—olive oil, in particular. For centuries olive oil has been used as a soothing agent for bruises and minor wounds. Think of mercy as the warm, pain-relieving balm that God gently massages into all of our hurting places.
Pray this when you feel particularly wounded:
“Lord, have mercy on me.”
