Buying Ritual Items
Preparing for Sukkot
In this photo, taken sometime between 1897 and 1925, a group of men intently study the wares at a stand selling the ceremonial lulav (palm branch) and etrog (citron fruits) for the Sukkot holiday. The etrog in particular can command luxury-item prices around the time of Sukkot, with buyers looking for unblemished fruit with strong stems to show off to their friends and neighbors. Note the intent look of the man at center, who eyes the lulav and etrog in the foreground as if to determine whether they meet his strenuous requirements.
