St. Gregory I the Great (590-604)
Gregorius Anicius, St. Gregory, became the first monk to be crowned pope, sold property of the church to feed his people. Money given to the church was used to support personnel with just enough to maintain the buildings. Additionally, it was instructed by the Pope that most of the money received was to be returned as alms to the community. St. Gregory penned these words in a letter. " I hold the office of steward to the property of the poor."
