Pontius Pilate’s wife
During his questioning of Jesus, Pontius Pilate received a message from his wife: “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much over him today in a dream.” (Matt 27:19) It must have taken quite a bit of courage for Pilate’s wife to interrupt her husband’s work in order to send this urgent message. Her dream was very powerful, so powerful that she endured some type of suffering, and she felt that she must speak up. We too are called to be vocal when we see injustice. Like Pilate’s wife, we may experience suffering, and our words may go unheeded; but silence in such circumstances may be seen by others as approval.
