Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno
Although Fr. Capodanno is not an official saint, this Staten Island native’s cause for canonization was officially opened in 2002. He became a Maryknoll priest and missionary and joined the Navy as a chaplain in 1965. Determined to minister to soldiers, he volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam and fearlessly followed the troops into dangerous war zones. He was loved and respected by the soldiers, who nicknamed him the “Grunt Padre.” Fr. Capodanno was shot and killed while dragging a wounded soldier to safety, a heroic act for which he was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor.
