Washington, Feb 8 (RNS) -- If you're wondering what film to see this weekend, the U.S. Catholic bishops hope you make it "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," their pick for the top film of 2000.

The U.S. Catholic Conference -- the social policy arm of the bishops' conference -- reviewed 240 movies released last year and issued its top 10 picks, along with a five-tier rating system. Sixty-six percent of the films were rated as "A-III" or "A-IV," suitable for adults only, while 7 percent were rated "A-I" for the entire family and 16 percent were rated "A-II" for adults and adolescents. Eleven percent were rated "O" for morally offensive.

The conference's picks are:

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," the widely acclaimed film set in 19th century China with its masterful use of special effects and martial arts. Rated PG-13 and A-III by the bishops.

"Traffic," a suspense thriller about the drug trade starring Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Rated R and A-IV by the bishops.

"Chicken Run," the zany British claymation adventure of a flock of chickens trying to avoid the butcher's pie machine. Rated G and A-I by the bishops.

"Butterfly," a coming-of-age film set in pre-fascist Spain that tells the story of a boy and his compassionate schoolteacher. Rated R and A-III by the bishops.

"Billy Elliot," the moving story of an Irish coal miner's son who leaves his family to become a ballet dancer. Rated R and A-III by the bishops.

"Best in Show," a hilarious romp through the dog show culture. Rated PG-13 and A-IV by the bishops.

"Remember the Titans," the true story of the desegregation of two football teams and their battle to overcome racism and prejudice. Rated PG and A-II by the bishops.

"Cast Away," starring Tom Hanks as a Federal Express employee stranded on a deserted island for four years. Rated PG-13 and A-II by the bishops.

"The Color of Paradise," the moving story of a young Iranian boy who is left by his father and cared for by his grandmother. Rated PG and A-II by the bishops.

"East-West," the postwar story of a Russian man who returns to find his Parisian wife driven to extremes by the brutal living conditions. Rated PG-13 and A-III by the bishops.
