Sweet Shore

Sweet Shore

Who’s in Charge Here, Anyway?

I’m in Mammoth Lakes, CA.  There’s still a lot of snow up here–the higher elevations are pretty much covered with it, and in today’s weather report, it says it will be 35 degrees tonight with possible snow above 9000 feet tomorrow.  It’s the end of June, so my granddaughters are asking why it might snow in the summer time.

At first I just told them to blame Al Gore–after all, in addition to inventing the internet, I believe he is also responsible for “Global Warming” or, as it is now called “Climate Change.”

It’s interesting to hear discussions about all of the weird weather that’s been happening around the world in the last couple of years.  People have very short memories.

A few years ago, we were being told to prepare for the coming ice age…

There have been other years when the natural disasters happened with the same amount of intensity and frequency, so there may be some merit to the argument that it’s all cyclical.

I don’t know who’s right, and to be absolutely honest, I don’t care!

What I DO know is that God is almost certainly going to destroy this earth long before we humans have with all of our meddling and irresponsibility.  To sort of misquote Bill Cosby, “God brought this world into being, and He can take it out whenever He wants to.”

It seems to me that we’d all be better off thinking about the end of the world that God will bring about whenever he’s ready and start preparing our hearts and souls for that glorious and frightening event that is surely going to happen.

I’m going to address this issue only once more, since the entire purpose of my post last summer has been misunderstood. Whether a person believes in global warming, climate change or nothing at all was not my point. My obvious error was in invoking Al Gore’s name and mentioning in passing the issue of global warming.

My post never said Christians should behave irresponsibly as we live on this magnificent planet that God has given us. Of course, we above all of earths inhabitants should do our best to protect and care for the earth.

What I DID say (and I’ll say it one more time and then I’m done) is this: While we may have some influence on what TYPE of earth we have, GOD is the only One who will determine the time and place for the world to end. In light of that, it is up to us to live holy, responsible lives while we are here and to pass on to our grandchildren the desire to live godly, upright lives and leave the world a better place than we found it.

Christians SHOULD be concerned with global warming and the state of the earth, to say otherwise is IRRESPONSIBLE. We are to be good stewards of the earth and care about our planet. As a believer I believe we should be socially responsible and conscious as well.

To all of you who are leaping to Al Gore’s defense–that was my (apparently failed) attempt at sarcastic humor–apparently it doesn’t translate well when written..
Secondly, I never said we are to “trash the earth.”
What I believe I did say is that God is in charge and He will ultimately determine when the earth is destroyed–nothing man does one way or the other will change that.

Dear Nora, you missed the chance to explain science to your grandchildren–you know, why snow is on a high peak in summer. Much better than snarky remarks about Al Gore. While not my favorite politician-scientist wanna-be, Gore is nevertheless passionate about the environment and keeping intact that with which God has provisioned us (that we are wontonly destroying).

I believe we are to be good stewards of God has given us. So you feel we can just trash the earth because it won’t be here that long anyway. At lest Al Gore didn’t attack two countries and kill thousands of people on both sides.

Know your weather … Al Gore had NOTHING to do with this …

As a note – Mountains used to have much MORE snow than they have today all year round…

Thanks for reading and for your comment…not sure where the reference to Fox News came from–I don’t believe I referenced anything from Fox News. The “blame Al Gore” reference was something I thought up all by myself as a bit of silliness in the midst of a serious reflection.

You are correct, though–we’d be much better off helping and loving our neighbors, which might also be a result of trying to keep our hearts right before God. “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 2:27

That is what I hope I am modeling for my granddaughters.

I think we’d be much better off helping and loving our neighbors, bringing help to the poor and afflicted in our world than worrying about an event that may not happen for hundreds or thousands of years. I know that plenty of people have been able to discern the signs of the beginning of the end. And have been doing so for almost two thousand years already.

(Global cooling, and the attendant “ice age” was an hypothesis proposed and shortly thereafter rejected about 40 years ago, and only kept alive by corporatist anti-science types.) You might want to try teaching your granddaughters about the real world rather than the Foxnews fantasy world, and how and why snow can occur during summer seasons. The science isn’t that hard, and most children can learn it by 5th grade any more.
