Dogs in space? Yes — with soy sauce

How far we’ve come since Laika:

Yang Liwei, the 44-year-old military pilot who commanded the Shenzhou Five mission in 2003, revealed the menu on-board the spacecraft in his autobiography, The Nine Levels between Heaven and Earth.
“Many of my friends are curious about what we eat [in space] and think that the astronauts must have some expensive delicacies, like shark’s fin or abalone,” he wrote. “Actually we ate quite normal food, there is no need to keep it a secret,” he added.
He listed a menu including braised chicken, steamed fish and dog meat from Huajiang county in Guangdong, which is famed for its nutritional benefits in China.

Man, you put sriracha sauce on it, and I’ll eat just about anything.

and of course, when i comment about the wonders of sriracha sauce, my computer lets me post a comment.
earlier when i tried three times to comment on a direct response from the esteemed Mr. Dreher on the topic of atheism, my computer is malfunctioning. :)
perhaps this is a sign that i should concentrate more on the little things i enjoy in life. why worry about throwing my voice into a maelstrom of debate when i can get a quick smile thinking about how awesome sriracha sauce is.
also it’s good on sushi.

Cecelia: so when the Chinese take over the world – our pets will be on the menu?
Not immediately. We will likely be the first plat du jour.
The Communist Chinese raise St. Bernards for their flesh. (You can buy dog skulls for making broth.) They kill prisoners for their organs. They force mothers to have abortions. And they stock the local Walmart with shoddy gewgaws.
The only socially redeeming virtue of the Chinese is that they do not carry blaring boomboxes on the subway.
Just don’t let your cute little shih-tzu wander through Chinatown alone.

The Chinese are building roads throughout Ethiopia, and the locals are begging their own officials to make them stop. Why? The dogs disappear. Ethiopians say they would rather have dogs than good roads.

Maybe I should add, the Ethiopians I’ve talked to, anyway.
Can’t help noting it: the Captcha is “filled braising.”

Wrapping up my four Beliefnet years, I was thinking about the posts that attracted the most attention and comment in that time. Without a doubt the most popular (in terms of attracting attention, not all of it admiring, to be sure) was the October 12, 2006, entry in which I revealed and explained wh

'Rape by deception'? Huh?
The BBC this morning reported on a bizarre case in Israel of an Arab man convicted of "rape by deception," because he'd led the Jewish woman with whom he'd had consensual sex to believe he was Jewish. Ha'aretz has the story here. Plainly it's a racist verdict, and a bizarre one -- but there's more t
