Prayer, Plain and Simple

It’s a “Brave New World” at the University of Illinois!

posted by Mark Herringshaw

Freedom of speech is a constitutional right everywhere in America, except – evidently – on college campuses. The University of Illinois has sacked Ken Howell, an adjunct professor who taught courses on Catholicism because one of his students accused him of hate speech. Professor Howell’s crime: He admitted that he personally agrees with the Catholic Church’s teaching that homosexual sex is immoral.

Beware: When expressing a personal moral conviction becomes “hate speech,” we have fully fallen off the ledge into the abyss of a “Brave New World” where the thought police judge intent over action. Wo be unto the people who cower under the boot of such tyranny!

“God, help us!”

What the university did was accuse every Catholic that attends UI of engaging in hate if they agree with the Catholic church’s position. Basically they said the equivalent of The Catholic Church is Whore of Babylon.
    Shame on them.

It’s not quite that simple. He taught (and later put in on a guide for an exam) that homosexuality is against “natural law,” which goes beyond Catholic teaching. To teach a perspective is one thing, but to put that persepctive on an exam and take points away from not agreeing with it is another. I think that the whoever wrote this blog post needs to get their facts straight (translation: sometimes reading headlines is not enough, take the time to inform yourself).

Professor Howell taught that according to natural moral law, homosexual acts, being between the same sex instead of being complementary (completing) as are heterosexual acts, violate the norms of Natural Law. This is true, and teaching it is not hate speech nor unfair to put it on an examination for someone who holds a different view. As Prof. Howell noted, Utilitarianism would not hold the same view of homosexual acts as in se wrong because it operates from a different premise in judging an act. Natural Law morality and Utilitarianism are different, but to insist, correctly, that under Natural Law morality all homo-sexual vice hetero-sexual acts are in se wrong is not imposing a point of view, it is simply repeating (instructing) the facts of Natural Law. To construe this as hate speech or even poor teaching shows a lack of intellectual rigor and commitment to teaching serious content vice whimsical imaginings and emotion-laden rantings.

This is just one case of a Christian being silenced. In a few years it will become the norm and if you quote anything from the bible…it will be hate speech. It has already happened in Canada and Sweden.
Free Speech will be a thing of the past.

Academia isn’t about Freedom of Speech, it’s about fact and critical thinking. The professor was expressing an opinion as if it was fact. He never mentions that what he’s saying is his own opinion. If he had then he may still be employed. The professor spares no words trying to equate homosexuality with beastiality, pedophilia and an unequal misinformed exchange between two unequal people. This is where ignorance trumps scholarship, and is not acceptable in academia. In particular the professor opines, “then there are clearly homosexual acts which are injurious to their health but which are consented to. Why are they injurious? Because they violate the meaning, structure, and (sometimes) health of the human body.” This man obviously hasn’t been on the receiving end of oral sex, and knows nothing about anal eroticism. Put simply, if homosexual acts between two men violated the body, they wouldn’t feel good. If they didn’t feel good there would be far fewer homosexual men. He then goes on to say, “Natural Moral Theory says that if we are to have healthy sexual lives, we must return to a connection between procreation and sex. Why? Because that is what is REAL.” If that were true, sex wouldn’t feel good unless a woman was actually fertile and ovulating. The opinion is simply ridiculous. This professor was fired because the University was embarrassed by this man’s stupidity.

I disagree Mark…Free Speech is essential to critical thinking and the learning process. Facts can be influenced by bias. For the most part our universities are filled with left wing professors who use their classrooms as a platform for their own agendas. They are intolerent of all views particularly from those who believe in God.

If there are people who are NOT open minded it’s most likely the Liberal professor. How many professors across the country bad mouth people who believe in God? How many professors have lost jobs because they believe in God?
The fact is there are risks to anal intercourse. Both the anus and rectum contain bacteria and fecal matter, which can spread diseases and infections. The anus is different from the vagina in that it does not produce natural lubricants. Many people believe that this is one reason it is not natural. Because of this small tears or lesions may be produced and the receiving partner can suffer pain. Open sores are avenues for disease and infection, particularly AIDS.HIV. Also entrance into the anal canal is difficult because of the muscle structure. It is not natural. A lot of people do things that feel enjoyable but are not natural. A lot of people like pain. You could make a case for just about anything. How about erotic esphixiation? Natural? Is it wrong between two consenting adults? I know someone who died from this.
This man was fired because the college was probably filled with faculty that hated him and his views.

i do not believe that there is any space for expressing personal moral convictions, or anything else that might upset the dear students at our colleges, and that is why I have refused invitations to be an adjunct. so many public colleges need money, they will side with even one student in a disagreement, that it is amazing any education of quality is being done. i have counseled professers in our area who have left local community colleges for grading disputes.

amd52 AS MANY PEOPLE HAVE SAID OUR FREE SPEECH IS BASICALLY GONE. I BELIEVE THE PROFESOR THAT MADE HIS COMMENT STANDS FIRMLY ON HOW HE WAS RAISED. AND AS OF THE LIKE SO, MANY OF US WERE THE SAME AS THIS PROFESOR WAS, I ALSO, BELIEVE THE SAME AS HE. MARRIAGE IS FOR A MAN AND A WOMAN BIBLE OR NO BIBLE IT STATES MAN AND WOMAN SHALL MARRY AND PROCREATE. ACTUALLY IF EVERYONE STOPS AND THINKS IT IS NOT THE TIMES THAT HAVE CHANGED IT IS THE PEOPLE. AND THE NEW GENERATION ARE BASICALLY NOT RAISED WITH MORAL VALUE. BOTH PARENTS WORK, NO ONE OR JUST SIMPLE BABY SITTER OR NANNY OR DAY CARE. PARENTS ARE FRIENDS TODAY THEY GIVE THE KIDS EVERYTHING THEY WANT.. I SEE IT. I HAD TO EARN MY FIRST CAR. I SAVED MONEY BEFORE MARRIAGE MY KIDS CANNOT UNDERSTAND MY WAY OF THINKING. ALTHOUGH, I PUT MY LIFE ON HOLD FOR THEM. ANN MARIE

  • REALLY PEOPLE?

Mark – thank GOD there is still a reasonable person on these forums. If I am a PAYING student, the last thing I want to hear about is my professors personal moral beliefs. I don’t care what religion he is or what he thinks is morally correct or incorrect. He is a PROFESSOR at a UNIVERSITY where students PAY TO LEARN. Go to CHURCH is you want to hear about the infallible Christian religion. Here is what cracks me up: all the posters who are saying that we are losing our rights and the poor persecuted Christians are obviously UNEDUCATED or poorly so, with all the misspellings, grammatical errors, etc. This is why America is so very far behind other industrial nations. Let’s focus on LEARNING in schools and leave religion in CHURCH. Seperation of CHURCH AND STATE FOOLS.

Uh, the paying students were paying precisely in order to hear what the Catholic Church teaches.
The professor in question was teaching what the Catholic Church teaches as if it were fact because it IS a fact that the Catholic Church teaches in a specific way about homosexuality.
So none of the arguments made against this prof are valid.
    Try again.

  • Mary

The fact is that someone charged with accurately presenting Catholic doctrine is under obligation to do that.Steve is right, the prof was fulfilling his responsibility. There’s no question that an anti-Christian bias exists in most universities. From professors under pressure to student papers given a failing grade, the proclamation of Christian beliefs carries consequences on campus. Violations of the Constitution regaqrding free speech and freedom of religion occur with impunity. How “open-minded” is that?
