April 30 National No Phone Day Zone

No Food Zone sign from Janice Taylor, Your Weight Loss CoachOprah says, “A call or text isn’t worth taking a life. We must not allow more mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, sisters and brothers to die before we take action against distracted driving. Let’s put a stop to it now by joining together on April 30 for National No Phone Zone Day and by making our cars a No Phone Zone.” ~ Oprah
Watch out folks! For the first time in 20 years, this CityGrrl is driving.
I’m in Tucson doing my ‘solo act,’ which means I’m traveling by myself, no husband or friend with me to cart me around, so I rented a car and am on the road again for the first time in 20 years. My home base is New York City, and as odd as it may sound to the majority of you, I don’t own a car. No need; more of a nuisance than its worth.
Driving a car is much like riding a bike. As soon as you turn it on, you’re back in business. It took a minute or two – okay maybe three – to get in gear, and even parking is a snap, although I confess that I haven’t attempted parallel parking.
BUT what I do notice is that driving takes concentration! You have to have eyes behind your head, to the sides, and in front of you. You need to watch the other cars as they speed on by, change lanes and do unexpected things.
For the life of me, I cannot imagine how you can effectively have a meaningful conversation on your cell phone and be fully aware of the road at the same time. It’s reckless and just plain wrong.
So, Oprah, I’m on board. No Phone Day Zone, it is! And Oprah, while we’re at it, Our Lady of Weight Loss suggests that you make your car a “NO FOOD ZONE.” Seriously folks, think of the calories saved, as well as moneys saved from not having to have your inner-car cleaned out!
