Letting Go with Guy Finley
Best-selling "Letting Go" author Guy Finley's encouraging and accessible message is one of the true bright lights in our world today. His ideas go straight to the heart of our most important personal and social issues -- relationships, success, addiction, stress, peace, happiness, freedom -- and lead the way to a higher life.
Guy is the acclaimed author of The Secret of Letting Go and 38 other books and audio programs that have sold over a million copies in 18 languages worldwide. In addition, he has presented over 4,000 unique self-realization seminars to thousands of grateful students throughout North America and Europe over the past 25 years and has been a guest on over 600 television and radio shows, including national appearances on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, NPR, and many others.
Guy is a faculty member at the Omega Institute, and Director of Life of Learning Foundation, a non-profit Center for Self-Study in Merlin, Oregon. 200,000 people in 142 countries read his popular Key Lesson emails each week. His work is widely endorsed by doctors, business professionals, celebrities, and religious leaders of all denominations.
Guy's career reached this point through a circuitous path. Born into a successful show business family, he is the son of late-night TV and radio pioneer, Larry Finley. Growing up in Beverly Hills, his childhood friends were the sons and daughters of the most famous celebrities in the world. As a young man, Guy enjoyed success in a number of areas including composing award-winning music for many popular recording artists including Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, Billy Preston, and The Four Seasons, as well as writing the scores for several motion pictures and TV shows. From 1970-1979 he wrote and recorded his own albums under the Motown and RCA recording labels.
Throughout his youth, Guy suspected there was more to life than the type of worldly success that led to the emptiness and frustration he saw among his own successful friends and colleagues. In 1979, after travels throughout North America, India, and the Far East in search of truth and higher wisdom, Guy voluntarily retired from his flourishing music career in order to simplify his life and to concentrate on deeper self-studies.
In addition to his writing and appearance schedule, Guy presents four inner-life classes each week at Life of Learning Foundation in Merlin, Oregon. These classes are ongoing and open to the public. For more information about Guy Finley and his life-changing work, visit guyfinley.org.

Guy Finley talks about how true greatness does not need to be acknowledged as being great. It has nothing whatsoever to do with receiving the approval of others, nor of comparing ourselves to others in any way. In fact, greatness […]
Honesty heals; lies hurt. In these four words live all one needs to know and practice—that is, assuming one wishes to be whole, harmless, loving, and true. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
If there is one essential characteristic or element most needed to ensure the success of those who seek the immortal Self, it is self-honesty. Without true integrity—from the inside out—it is impossible for the aspirant to come into a conscious, […]
A reporter who had a deep and personal interest in higher spiritual matters heard of a certain teacher of truth who was held in high repute. But what caught the reporter’s attention more than anything else was that this modern-day […]
So many people today are bitter, broken-hearted, or just plain angry because of what happened to them while growing up. The reasons for their resentment or regret are as countless as are the number of unconscious people who unknowingly create […]
Guy Finley explains that the question in every spiritual aspirant’s mind is, “When will I be free?” To know the answer, first you must awaken entirely to what it is that enslaves you.
Who you really are—your immortal Self—doesn’t live in the past, and therefore cannot be punished by anything that happened there. If anything, the repeated pain of reliving whatever the problems may have been should show us that we’ve arrived in […]
So many people today are bitter, broken-hearted, or just plain angry because of what happened to them while growing up. The reasons for their resentment or regret are as countless as are the number of unconscious people who unknowingly create […]
You cannot do the work of starting life over and be busy reliving your past at the same time. Being new is a deliberate choice: it is an act of alignment that places you in conscious contact with a living […]
No one can say no to this world who is afraid to walk through it alone. The unseen cost of this baseless fear is not just ending up in the company of cowards but that one may lose the possibility […]
Guy explains that when you wrestle with the world to try to get the things you think will make you happy, you are fighting the wrong battle. When you finally understand that happiness can’t be won from this world, you […]
Billions give their lives away for a moment’s pleasure or the promise of approval. They sacrifice their happiness in the hope that by acquiring power they can make their world a prettier place in the face of all the ugliness […]
If common social convention—with all its contrivance and hypocrisy—has one redeeming value, it is this: the happy day may come when we realize that too much of our time has been spent conversing with cleverly disguised thieves, listening to and […]
To weigh the value of what this world can reward us with, we need only remove the scales from our eyes, for were we willing to measure how many times we have fallen victim to a world that promises us […]
Whether to persist and aspire to the Higher or drop into some dark despair, that is the question; and which of these two seeds flowers all depends on which one you choose to nourish and grow . . .
Guy Finley explains that within us exists both an affirming force that drives our wish to connect with the world above us, as well as a denying force that wants to keep us rooted in the desires of this world. […]
If you’ll persist with your sincere wish for higher learning, you can’t help but succeed. Persistence always prevails because part of its power is to hold you in place until either the world lines up with your wish or you […]
The pitfalls along the upper path leading to the realization of the immortal Self are well marked by the aspiring souls who have gone before us. Their legacy of spiritual insights and revelations serves as signposts along the way for […]
Once we realize that what makes any moment seem impassable is nothing other than our own resistance to what it asks of us, nothing remains impossible. Everything eventually yields to the one who persists. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
Nothing infuriates evil as much as being seen for what it is . . .
Guy Finley explains that we have lost our innate ability to discern what’s good from what’s evil, and instead make peace with anything that promises to reconcile a disturbance within us. But you can’t have your own life when something […]
There is nothing to do, only something to see . . . Blind reactions based on an incomplete understanding of your circumstances always sow the seeds of yet other unwanted moments yet to come. Everything you “do” in this manner […]
On this one point all saints, sages, and illumined beings agree: there is nothing as certain as silence, stillness, and solitude to introduce you to the divinity within. The first step in learning to be still isn’t really an action […]
Your true self is a creative silence, a ground of perfect stillness from which all disturbances appear and to which they return if left alone. The clearer this revelation becomes, the more confident you become that being still is the […]
We cannot separate the problems of this world—including the pain endured in agreeing to honor, respect, and support those we love—from the awakening of a patience and kindness that can be born in us no other way.
Guy Finley reveals and explains the four words that will always aid you and those around you in any stressful family situation.
The only way we begin to act as a true force of healing in the lives of others is when, at last, we cease to hurt ourselves.
Here’s a simple but ultimately very self-liberating action to take if you wish to reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that you feel in the company of others, friends, or family: Choose to be more interested in quietly discovering […]
When it comes to healing mental or emotional pain, the first step to freeing oneself is in seeing the following facts: resistance to anything (including psychological pain) is a secret form of fascination with it, and to be fascinated with […]
Learn to see and to use the presence of any psychological pain as an invitation to reprioritize your present values. . .
Guy explains that every time we are identified with a negative state that is judgment day. We are judged, but not in a punishing sense. We are actually invited to see where we have acted from an imbalanced state.
Whatever we try to go around in ourselves guarantees it will come around again, which is why the things we fear in life and about ourselves always tend to reappear. Here’s the law that governs this relationship: whatever we resist […]
It’s a little-known secret that our experience of life in any given moment is a direct reflection of what we actually value in that same moment. We may deny this unsettling truth, but when it comes to what we are […]
The main reason we suffer or feel bad about ourselves or our current circumstances isn’t because conditions in our lives have the power to punish us—because they don’t. We suffer only from spiritual amnesia. We’ve forgotten that God, the Divine […]
There is a direct and proportionate relationship between the degree of inconsolable pain that we have and a deep-seated misunderstanding of our real purpose for being alive. . . www.YourImmortalSelf.com
Guy Finley explains the revelation of our true self is the natural outcome of a constant pruning away of the illusions we have about our own character.
When our attention is drawn to how much we don’t want to be what we are in any given moment, we can’t see ourselves as we actually are! This means that all forms of resistance-born reactions are blinding agents; they […]
The real reason that we believe in any public performance—be it that of some well-known star or our own friends and loved ones—is that we are all, to one extent or another, actors on a stage. It’s not too far […]
Our need to change—to be made new—is constant; however, so is our resistance to change. The former is inseparable from the freedom it heralds, while the latter ensures the continuation of patterns that imprison the soul. Choose the latter and […]
The great journey leading to the immortal Self does not begin with fact but in faith untested. It is the journey of faith alone that reveals the fact of the Divine, much as a flower proves the unseen seed from […]
When the soul cries out to spirit to carry her to a new world beyond the boundaries of this earthly domain, she is calling for the winds of faith to sweep down, fill her tattered and empty sails, and take […]
Within each of us already lives a higher order of being, an immortal spirit that neither time nor circumstance can cause to end. *** Seated at the center of each of us lies buried a kind of celestial seed, buried […]
In times of great upheaval, if you will only agree to let go and die to yourself, it won’t be you who passes. So that not only will you bear witness to the sacrifice of yourself, but you will also […]
Rebirth is made possible because something dies to ensure it. In this eternal law of life hides a new understanding, a great key that many have sought but only few have ever found. As we are about to see, it […]
Since the nature of real life is genesis itself—the ceaseless rebirth of “what has been” giving way to “what is and will be”—this alone tells you that you have the power to change. www.YourImmortalSelf.com

In order to nurture our own awakening, we must first see the need to let go of those parts of us that we sense no longer serve us. This new kind of self-awareness is the interior “seed state” needed to […]
One of the gifts of being human is that our individual potential far exceeds the boundaries of our (animal) body, which, like all natural creations, must serve the general laws it’s been created to obey. We have the possibility of […]
Just as winter yields to the onset of spring, as surely does the moon submit to the sun, so too are we created to give ourselves to that Greater Life that alone can make us evergreen and fill us with […]
The pain in any unwanted revelation about our present level of self is being created by an unseen part of that same low level of self now being revealed…
Guy Finley explains that the nature that pursues a pleasure in order to be rid of a pain exploits the soul for its own end. When you finally start to see that your usual solutions to your pain don’t work, […]
Everything points to the existence of a timeless interior Presence that doesn’t just precede the relationships we are drawn to in our lives but actually serves to arrange them, including whatever life lessons we take from these encounters. Calling on […]
In one sense, the interior journey that leads to the immortal Self is demanding and difficult, even seemingly impossible at times; and yet, as paradoxical as it seems, there is nothing intrinsically hard about rising above ourselves and slipping into […]
There is no reward on earth, or even amongst the stars, equal to the realization of the divinity within you. Those who have awakened and attained this pearl of great value understand—with no sense of pride for their knowledge—that the […]
Our experience of life in any given moment is a direct reflection of what we actually value in that same moment . . . From Guy Finley’s new book and Amazon #1 bestseller, The Secret of Your […]
The moment you’ve been waiting for is here! It’s your turn to be one of the very few men and women — perhaps 1 in 100,000 — who have found the greatest treasure on earth. Announcing the worldwide release of […]
No oak became mighty in a moment, No mountain towered overnight; True greatness is grown in the soul By long exposure to God’s light.
The way our present nature looks at life around us — as well as everything appearing to move within it — is through our five senses. This means that as we are, the sum of our relationship with the world […]
I can think of no greater encouragement in this life than the self-evident truth that within each of us dwells something Extraordinary. By “Extraordinary” I don’t mean any one condition or sensation born of a particularly exciting experience or even […]
The reason most people never come to know a true relationship with the divine is because this perfect union is born in the consciousness of their helplessness, nourished by their poverty and matured in their humility.
Guy Finley explains that there is a wave of love that alone has the capacity to wash away everything that causes you to be sad and angry. But you must ride it, be in its waters, and allow it to […]
The next time you experience any kind of pain, you can do something that will turn it into a new and different experience. Each time you catch a pain, admit that you don’t understand it. You thought you did. You […]
Question: I have been a Christian almost all my life. A few years ago I had to have open-heart surgery, which caused a stroke, messing up my ability to do my job. I ended up losing a job that I […]
I’m sure that we can all agree that no intelligent, conscious man or woman would ever intentionally hurt him or herself. No one would choose to ache. Yet the fact remains that all of us do hurt ourselves every day […]
Before we can know a happiness beyond the reach of conflict or sorrow, we must ourselves be whole; for any happiness apart from self-wholeness is only half a happiness and must, in time, prove itself so.
Guy explains that in order for the spirit to make its home in a human being, it must enter into all their parts to reveal, heal, and unite them. If only one part of you is involved, the rest is […]
We go through our lives in a continual dance of being filled with something that needs an answer, and then going out and finding that answer… only to find out that our answer wasn’t quite the answer. Then, as we […]
Question: I know I have a confused and divided mind, so how can I get it into self-wholeness? Answer: Just as an electric fan cannot sort papers on a desk, giving them order, neither can the whirling mind produce Peace. […]
It is in the acceptance of life as it is — as it is given to us in each moment — that we find the wholeness, the holiness that is the one true center of this storm called “life.”
The main reason we must always remember to hold our chin up whenever negative thoughts try to drag us down is because whichever direction we choose first in that moment is what the rest of us will follow…
Guy Finley tells a fun and insightful story about an “achy lake” that was disturbed by the nuts that the squirrels kept dropping into it, to illustrate that you can use all of the disruptive people in your life to […]
Question: I have struggled for the past couple years with co-workers. Many of them seem intent on making me feel bad by making degrading comments about me. I have felt targeted for ridicule, and as a result don’t have much confidence […]
Question: Without reverting to their lower level, how do you get people to stop making their hurtful, cut-down remarks? Answer: One of the reasons people pounce on or attack us the way they do, is that they are feeding off […]
Question: In my job I must deal daily with several emotionally dark coworkers. What can I do to handle this situation better, besides getting another job? Answer: I know that it is difficult to be surrounded by toxic people; however, […]
Whatever we consent to embrace in life — including unwanted events that may cause us to suffer — adds to our lives a measure of love.
Guy Finley explains that when you give your love to what you know is right and true, you begin to develop a relationship with that which seeded that love in you in the first place. The more you learn to […]
Question: So if a person feels “I have no love in my life,” if that person would even have a sincere wish to know love, would that be the beginning of true love? Answer: You can build a fire in […]
You know what the most outstanding feature of a human being is? Whatever he or she wants to be in relationship with, they can be united to. It is the greatest gift. No other creature has this. Even the angels […]
Question: People believe that they have to have certain conditions in their lives in order to have love. I have to have a person in my life. I have to have everything just right. But what you teach is that […]
In this world of opposites not everything that we go through can feel good; but to see the necessity of naturally conflicting states — and how they are balanced in all things — is to realize the existence of an […]
Guy Finley explains that the grand movement of life itself is a ceaseless rebalancing. But because the native state of every living organism is inertia, when life produces the conditions it needs to make itself complete and whole we find […]
Question: Is it easier to grow spiritually if one is naturally “emotional,” that is having easier access to one’s feelings? Answer: We are each according to type “centered” in certain centers in us. Some are more emotional, some are more […]
Nothing seems harder to accept than the fact that we are responsible for so much of what proves to be unnecessary suffering. But we must challenge this involuntary, often intractable refusal to consider such ideas. The truth is that we […]
We are not made by that Great Intelligence that balances whole star systems, to suffer from the conflict that arises from an unbalanced understanding of our own essential nature! This is why if we ever wish to gain conscious control […]
Our true responsibility as caregivers is to lead by example… by living up to our own spiritual potential.
Guy Finley responds to a question about the spiritual potential of autistic children, and reveals that the true responsibility of a caregiver is to first live up to their own potential.
Question: Any thoughts on what is a good way to share my spiritual work with my kids? Answer: Be as consciously kind as you can be, which means to not express (but watch instead) your negative states. Be as encouraging […]
Question: The more I think I know about true spirituality, the more I become easily aggravated by the behavior of others when I hear them make an obviously false (spiritually) statement, or I observe their inconsistent behavior. I sense that […]
Question: My father has had cancer for about two years. Neither of us talk about dying. When a nurse asked him about dying, he said he was afraid he wouldn’t go to heaven. I would like to help in some […]
Stress, anxiety, and tension are the dark jewels adorning a thorny crown we must wear whenever we try to live more than one moment at a time…
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about the importance of being present to ourselves, especially when the mind seeks to identify with something so that it can feel disturbed.
Sooner put out a fire with jet fuel than gain the upper hand on some anxious state by throwing more agitated thoughts into its turmoil.
Your awareness of troubled thoughts and feelings roaming through you is the power that keeps their harmful and self-limiting influences from having control over you. Their aim is to get you to define yourself by identifying with their dark and […]
The next time (and every time) you catch some negative thought or feeling that says, “I am anxious,” “I am scared,” “I am mad,” or “I am in so much pain” — the first thing to do is to come […]
To live in Presence is the path to peace…
Guy talks about the importance of being present to ourselves at all times, especially as the unattended mind creates false purposes for itself which can only lead to pain.
Question: I have been doing great at ridding myself of false purpose, but can’t yet seem to find my real purpose. The careers I might be interested in are all out of my reach. Any comment? Answer: Be patient and […]
It’s impossible to separate a false purpose in life from the pain that it produces.
In one way, it’s hard to say what has happened to the health of our world and the people upon it, not that suitable terms don’t exist. The problem is that whatever picture one paints with words, it points only […]
The habitual assumption that life’s answer to our request to realize a New Life is going to be “No,” effectively ensures that our wish will not be granted! Any part of our being that unhappily assumes something negative will happen […]
Guy Finley explains that a true spiritual aspirant is someone who works to “make it real” because he or she has seen the futility of deflecting life through pretense and imagination.
Here for your consideration is a very common but false belief about what one must do or be in order to transcend the limitations in his or her life. Study this closely. See how its unquestioned, socially accepted convention serves […]
Most of us at least sense that whenever we fall into despair, lose our temper, or relive some past painful regret, we have lost possession of ourselves. To some extent we know that negative states limit our freedom because, in […]
Life is always new, which means there is no such thing as an “old” problem. The only thing aged in us, with regards to what continues to make us ache, is our worn out ideas about how to overcome our […]
We are not created to spend our lives in fearful preparation over what may come — but rather to use whatever comes our way, each moment, to help us perfect our understanding that God is good…
In this short talk, Guy Finley describes what it takes to let go and let a higher intelligence reconcile the sense of dissatisfaction we feel in our lives.
As life pours itself out in the stream of passing time, and we run into challenges seemingly greater than our ability to answer — each of these encounters “asks” this question of us: “Are you willing to change (who you […]
In those moments when we meet a challenge that stands in our way, we are not meeting some immovable, transient object. In reality, we are meeting nothing more than our own present understanding of that event. Wherever we are — […]
Question: When quieting my mind, there is sometimes a feeling of peace and clarity in the present moment, but often there is this gloomy, dark feeling of emptiness, together with a sense of fear about the future making me feel […]
Anywhere light shines, darkness submits…
In this short talk, Guy Finley explains how we cannot fail if we will persevere through our darkest moments, because the light never fails to illuminate what presently hides in the dark.
We have an essential need to be at peace. Part of that essential need to be at peace is to know that we are in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing, and to know it […]
The secret purpose of that self-loathing nature in us – that wants us to suffer today for what we could not do yesterday – is not there to help us make straight our mistakes, but rather to ensure that we […]
We must no longer agree to do the dark will that wants us to be its person. We must want, and put first, the will of what is Light and right for ourselves and everyone else around us. This means […]
Were it not for our mysterious capacity to perfectly reflect moments of beauty – to be one with it in heart, mind, and soul – there would be no beauty or harmony to behold…
In this special short talk featuring music performed live at Life of Learning Foundation in Southern Oregon, Guy Finley talks about the music and rhythm of life itself, and how we as human beings are meant to be sensitive instruments, responding […]
Question: What are the first steps in learning to discern the truth? Answer: One of the things that makes music good for us is our effortless relationship with its harmony and balance, with its rhythm and composition. We don’t have […]
What we must learn to ask ourselves, not once or twice daily, but a hundred times and every time it strikes us to remember ourselves, is this question: Where is my attention right now, and what is my experience of […]
The music of the mind — its harmony, or not, is expressed by the order of its thoughts through which it is instrumented. Confusion is dissonance; clarity is flow.
Though we find no evidence of anything noble in someone who has betrayed us, neither is there anything noble in our bitterness.
Guy Finley explains that when you feel betrayed by God, the actual betrayal is that your own mind would lead you to believe that God deserts those who love him.
We all know exactly what it is like to be certain we have let go of something sorrowful or worrisome, only to find ourselves in a similar sad situation moments later. Merely wanting to let go of an unhappy circumstance […]
Question: Someone I love has hurt me deeply, betrayed my trust, and now I don’t know how I should feel about this person. Should I forgive and forget, or try to find another who won’t be the same way? Seems […]
Our present mind knows of only two possible ways to turn when faced with a personal crisis. But neither of the directions it knows to look in ever resolve anything. Whenever painful events happen, they tend to fall on only […]
There is no greater, more reliable teacher of true self-knowledge than intentional patience and, when married to a willingness to observe oneself through the stillness and sacrifice that such patience demands, there exists no swifter, more sure path to self-realization…
Guy Finley explains that you live in an entire galaxy of forces which ceaselessly act upon you, and it’s only your awareness of these energies that allows you to use them for your benefit rather than be unconsciously dominated by […]
You may not see it unfolding, but here’s what happens the moment you take your eye off of seeing the whole of yourself: Some unseen part of yourself takes one step closer to falling into the pit of some pain […]
The new inner vision that comes from self-observation is what provides you with true self-knowledge. To see yourself in this new way means that at the same moment of being aware of your physical self, you are also watching what […]
When we can observe ourselves by being awake to our thoughts and feelings, we allow our natural higher intelligence, our higher nature, to prevail over the unnatural thoughts and feelings of our self-defeating lower nature. Self-observation allows you to understand […]
The true measure of our wealth is not counted by what we do with the riches we may have, but rather is determined by the character of what fills our heart when what we have is taken away…
Guy Finley explains that as we awaken spiritually, we will gradually discover the truth about our authentic poverty, and in the process learn what it means to be grateful for everything we are given.
Question: I’ve noticed that the more I hear people complain about their unwanted circumstances in life, the less likely they are to do anything to change them. It makes me wonder if I’m just as ungrateful and unwilling! Answer: You […]
To have real gratitude, to have that fullness of heart that, by its greatness, fulfills the one who holds it, begins with allowing God to give you a portion of His Life… a gift one can only receive once he […]
This life of ours can either be one of endless servitude or endless gratitude, and we must choose which it is to be. To choose to live a life of endless servitude to a master that promises pleasures but delivers […]
Real love wants nothing outside of itself…
Guy Finley explains what real love is and what it isn’t, and notes that it is impossible for you to genuinely love another person if you cannot first be completely content and comfortable with being alone.
The person who enables another human being believes the only choice they have is to somehow keep that person in line, save that person from themselves — not for the good of the other human being but because the enabler, […]
A lot of what goes wrong on this planet is born of people who feel the weight of false responsibilities. Enabling another human being is a form of a false responsibility. Anyone who lives with someone who abuses them enables […]
We never enable someone else without having first disabled our own Higher Nature that knows better than to bargain for friendship, love — or to just feel “needed” in some way…
Freedom from the prison of negative states remains impossible until one loses interest in the false, but powerful, sense of self derived from identifying with (one’s own) surging sensations.
Guy Finley explains that each of us is a unique blend of energies, both positive and negative, all of which are meant to be used for the purpose of self-revelation.
Whenever a negative state comes to you, try to see yourself in that state through the intelligence of the following idea as opposed to seeing it through the ignorance that the state produces in you: All negative states are an […]
It’s my feeling that each of us who are interested in truly changing our lives, and so the world we live in, must turn what we learn into dedicated actions. Doing what’s true must follow our understanding of the Truth […]
There are two kinds of people in this world whose quality of life, like all of us, is determined by their outlook. There are those who feel chained to life by their own unrelenting doubts, and then there are those […]
Our demands that life be what we want it to be do not make life more desirable… they only hide from us just how undesirable it is to be who we are in that moment…
Guy Finley explains that we all have natural preferences in life, based on our individual make-up and conditioning. But when life doesn’t match up with our preferences, the pain and negativity we feel isn’t because of what has happened, it’s […]
Question: My life lately has been a seemingly unending string of “unwanted events.” I keep thinking God is trying to teach me something, or worse, that He is punishing me for something (à la Job in the Old Testament!). It’s […]
We must develop the patience to watch a moment long enough to see that the pain in it belongs to the self that insists that life honors its preferences. When we are impatient, we are certain that it is because […]
We may not yet see it as being so, but whenever unwanted situations come along — stripping us of some beloved attachment — it is the operation of one world acting upon another. There is our familiar world, the one […]
All forms of negativity may only dwell in us as long as they trick us into granting them permission to live there. Our task isn’t to overpower, or otherwise deny these sufferings, but to bring such light to bear upon […]
Hoping to help someone — who loves to be negative — see the harm of being identified with dark states, is like trying to teach a bat to appreciate sunlight, or a mud hen to preen in fresh clean waters.
No person is good or bad in and of himself, any more than a trumpet is good or bad for the music sounded out of its horn. It is the “player,” the musician behind the mouthpiece who determines these qualities […]
Question: I am at work sometimes as much as I am at home. How do we avoid the negative influences of others in the workplace? Answer: The whole point is not that we avoid what are unavoidable, difficult conditions, but […]
There are many un-illumined and downward trending parts in all of us that not only seek out their unconscious counterparts (in others) but that are secretly strengthened in the conflicted company of such dark and negative energies. We can see […]
Any time you sit, think about, and “stew” over what someone did to you, or simmer in anger about some past event, the real reason for your pain is because you’re cooking your own goose!
Guy Finley explains that all forms of rage, whether inwardly or outwardly directed, are the result of our thwarted attempts to possess what we think we need in order to be whole, happy, and in control.
The faster we try to go with whatever it may be that we are doing incorrectly, whether it’s hammering a nail or trying to nail down our happiness, the more and more frustrated we become for the unsatisfactory results. It […]
When you hear someone say, “I’m sick and tired of it,” what they are really saying without realizing it is that they’re sick and tired of suffering from their own lack of understanding. This all becomes clear once we understand […]
All of us have felt, at one time or another, trapped in our own life. During these periods of heightened unhappiness, one thing seems clear: the only reason we haven’t realized our great potential is because we’re being held back. […]
If you listen carefully, quietly, you’ll hear the voice of the moment tell you that all is well and always will be…
Guy Finley explains that we always give our attention to what we value most. You can’t “look” for the path to the Divine. The path is right here, right now. Our work is to just attend and listen for the […]
What we have taken as being our “choices” in life really belong to a nature whose mechanical reactions leave us virtually without a voice in our experience of what happens to us. In order to elevate the nature of our […]
Question: You have said to “follow what you love” and the rest of your life will take care of itself. I have been pondering whether or not to pursue a hobby as a business. The “still small voice” tells me […]
We can go on living as we have, where we allow our lower nature to respond to life for us by “remembering” what it does, and then “choosing” these reactions to act as our guide, telling us how we ought […]
Real love is immeasurable, which means it can neither be reached nor realized through measured steps…
Guy Finley explains that we are created to be the instrument of divine love, but currently all we know is conditional love as we chase after the temporary pleasures of the world. As we work to be open to each […]
Have you ever seen in a relationship that you have with someone that the alignment is starting to go off (so to speak) and you can see the car starting to drift? So, you grab the steering wheel — meaning […]
Isn’t it frustrating that on one hand you know that you’re supposed to have nice relationships with everyone, and yet you have almost no relationship with anyone that actually is nice? It’s a real grain of sand in one’s soul… […]
In its essence, every relationship in life between you and another man or woman is a reflection of the one relationship that produces it. There is one relationship that is the father, the mother of all relationships — just as […]
How to stop thinking and start seeing…
Guy Finley explains that there is a nature inside of us that wants nothing to do with spiritual work and inner transformation. We must meet this part of ourself that has no interest in doing what is right and good, […]
In the world of thoughts and feelings, there is always going to be something to bother you. You are constantly identifying with and pouring your life energy into what cannot grow. Instead, you keep trying to grow by thinking… trying […]
Our spiritual work is to bit by bit discover natural limitations in the thought process. What has happened in the world today is that human beings have had life replaced with the concept of living. In the concept of living […]
What we need to succeed in the spiritual life is a heart that can see. Most people spend more time taking care of their physical bodies than their spiritual ones. They preoccupy themselves with insane appetites to try to keep […]
It is a distinct stage in the development of the aspirant when — rather than being easily distracted by some imagined consolation for his pain, or by concluding who is to blame for it — his first and real […]
Guy Finley explains that true goodness is not measured by actions which validate your image of being good. What is truly good has no self-reference — it comes from pure action, which is a natural outcome of being present.
The character of goodness, of compassion and kindness that we would like to reflect and express before our friends (and enemies), requires that we place “its” life before our own. And yet, when we agree to this interior action of […]
Once we see it’s impossible to please ourselves at the expense of the pain of someone else, we are released from the cycle of seeking a false comfort whose conflict compromises “winners” and “losers” alike. Only then are we free […]
When, at times, the spiritual aspirant feels as though there’s no reason to go on…because he can no longer believe in an imagined good somewhere ahead of him, he comes to what seems a complete dead end. And yet, it […]
Whoever struggles to protect himself from his perceived fear does not banish his enemy but secretly breeds the dark seeds of its life…
Guy Finley explains in this brief talk that it is possible for us to find complete freedom from the mechanical, enemy-making nature that presently tricks us into believing that it is necessary to our well-being to have enemies of any […]
We cannot change the world that we see until something changes in us the way we see it…
Question: All of the difficulties we have with one another seem to be due to the fact that we’re all trying to protect ourselves. It seems like in the very process of trying to keep ourselves safe, we actually create […]
If we really lived in this world as it is, there would be no war. If I really lived with the person that I was married to, if I really lived with the children that I have… it would be […]
To discharge ones duty is the first responsibility. To do this thing well is the second task. To do more than one is asked is the Path to Perfection…
Question: I have struggled with my career and work for all of my life. My wife and I live frugally, not wastefully, and do our best to be responsible householders. You have said that we must first be good householders […]
If we went through our day tending half as much to the care of God’s business, as we give to our own affairs, then — from the resulting light of gladness seen spreading across the faces of family, friends, and […]
Question: On the householder’s path, I sometimes find it difficult to stop doing the mental work and start doing the mundane day-to-day tasks. Any suggestions for getting the same enthusiasm in earning our daily bread? Answer: Life gives us back […]
Guy Finley explains that being a good householder means that we are able to properly attend to what is practical before what is pleasing. By placing ourselves in this right relationship with our responsibilities, we become better able to discern […]
Within us lives a timeless Self that cannot forget what is right, bright, and true any more than the sun has to try to remember to shine each day.
Guy Finley explains that if you want to have a relationship with the divine, with what’s right and good, you must learn to stand up for truth within you. Have the courage to exchange self-concern for spiritual awareness, and you […]
Question: Where is the line between not having an issue with anything and enabling or allowing? I don’t understand where I must “forget myself” and where I must stand up for something. Answer: One should always try to “forget oneself” […]
If we knew that the universe was set up for our higher transformation, and that Love is the underlying force in everything we see, and don’t see, we would never give in to the fear that keeps us locked in […]
To have courage does not mean that we will be without fear. Real courage – the kind of courage we need on a day-to-day basis to act with integrity in our business and personal relationships – is our willingness to […]
Living in fear of what dwells within you – whatever it may be that you deny, or that you don’t want others to know about – is how darkness ensures you remain just outside the circle of Divine healing Light.
When we feel pain, we tend to take it personally and feel like we are the only ones in the world who are suffering. That seems like the natural thing to do. But what if pain is impersonal? What if […]
Question: When I manage to remember my higher aim in life, I seem to lose control of my life, and other people are quick to take advantage of what they evidently see as my weakness. Should this be happening or […]
Question: Why in the world am I so weak that I can’t remember my good intentions? How will I ever succeed spiritually when this weakness keeps getting in the way of my making any real progress? Answer: Part of the […]
There are those who avoid — at all costs — being tested by life. There are those who wait, in fear, for life to test them. Then there are the rare few who choose to use life to test them […]
The past is as powerless to darken the present moment, as is a shadow to reach up and drag down the form that casts it…
(Audio) The True Nature of Greatness
Guy Finley talks about how true greatness does not need to be acknowledged as being great. It has nothing whatsoever to do with receiving the approval of others, nor of comparing ourselves to others in any way. In fact, greatness is connected to ...
