Letting Go with Guy Finley
Best-selling "Letting Go" author Guy Finley's encouraging and accessible message is one of the true bright lights in our world today. His ideas go straight to the heart of our most important personal and social issues -- relationships, success, addiction, stress, peace, happiness, freedom -- and lead the way to a higher life.
Guy is the acclaimed author of The Secret of Letting Go and 38 other books and audio programs that have sold over a million copies in 18 languages worldwide. In addition, he has presented over 4,000 unique self-realization seminars to thousands of grateful students throughout North America and Europe over the past 25 years and has been a guest on over 600 television and radio shows, including national appearances on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, NPR, and many others.
Guy is a faculty member at the Omega Institute, and Director of Life of Learning Foundation, a non-profit Center for Self-Study in Merlin, Oregon. 200,000 people in 142 countries read his popular Key Lesson emails each week. His work is widely endorsed by doctors, business professionals, celebrities, and religious leaders of all denominations.
Guy's career reached this point through a circuitous path. Born into a successful show business family, he is the son of late-night TV and radio pioneer, Larry Finley. Growing up in Beverly Hills, his childhood friends were the sons and daughters of the most famous celebrities in the world. As a young man, Guy enjoyed success in a number of areas including composing award-winning music for many popular recording artists including Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, Billy Preston, and The Four Seasons, as well as writing the scores for several motion pictures and TV shows. From 1970-1979 he wrote and recorded his own albums under the Motown and RCA recording labels.
Throughout his youth, Guy suspected there was more to life than the type of worldly success that led to the emptiness and frustration he saw among his own successful friends and colleagues. In 1979, after travels throughout North America, India, and the Far East in search of truth and higher wisdom, Guy voluntarily retired from his flourishing music career in order to simplify his life and to concentrate on deeper self-studies.
In addition to his writing and appearance schedule, Guy presents four inner-life classes each week at Life of Learning Foundation in Merlin, Oregon. These classes are ongoing and open to the public. For more information about Guy Finley and his life-changing work, visit guyfinley.org.

What are we actually talking about when we speak of letting go? After all, no one wants to let go of something that has proven itself to be satisfying! Whatever it is that we wish to let go of must […]
Question: What is the difference between useless sentimentality and emotions that have a legitimate place in our lives? Answer: Useless sentimentality is easily recognized, just like a fruitcake, by its unnatural weight. Higher emotions are not only more palatable, but […]
Who hasn’t crashed into that dreaded moment when we realize that someone we love has had a change of heart toward us? Suddenly we see, perhaps for the first time, how painfully dependent we’d become upon his or her company […]
In this life there is no greater prize than one’s ability to be in full possession of oneself, regardless of circumstance; neither is there any task with so great a personal price. . . www.YourImmortalSelf.com
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about how anything that is authentically new in life is the fulfillment of a pattern, which then creates a new pattern, which itself is then intended to be transformed into something new. It […]
The trees take in sunlight, transforming its vibrant energy into flowers that become fruits, giving rise to slow-spreading root systems that anchor both tree and soil, and growing leaves that shade the ground below for any creature seeking respite there […]
If you want to know your true and proper place in the great story of life, you must learn to read your own heart… for within it, line after line, is written all there is to know.
No oak became mighty in a moment, No mountain towered overnight; True greatness flowers in the soul By long exposure to God’s light.
Your possibilities in this life for interior growth are as unlimited as is your willingness to consciously meet your limitations. . .
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about how all true teachings exist to help us reveal and transcend the present state of darkness that we live in, not to punish us for it.
Question: Recently I have been seeing some things about myself that are both startling and surprising. For instance, how silly it seems (now) to think that I could possibly know what is greater than myself without that same greatness inviting […]
When you run into a personal obstacle, you have not run into an outer condition that is denying you happiness. You have run into your own present life-level. Your level of being is what determines where you are at any […]
All of us have felt, at one time or another, trapped in our own life. During these periods of heightened unhappiness, one thing seems clear: the only reason we haven’t realized our great potential is because we’re being held back. […]
Guy Finley explains that multitasking is a form of greed, which has its root in fear.
Each time you’re faced with a logjam of tasks that seem far beyond your mortal abilities to resolve in the allotted time, here’s what to do. First, whittle these logs down to manageable size by writing each one out on […]
At any given moment, regardless of appearance or any emotional certainty to the contrary, it is not the demand of those already-overdue, hundred and one tasks that have you feeling so overwhelmed and under prepared. What you’re really experiencing is […]
Have you ever had this experience? You’re faced with so many things that have to be done in a timely manner that it overwhelms you . . . so all you do is nothing! Well, that is, almost nothing. You […]
Never mind how much there may be to do, or how hard some task appears to be. Get one thing done and then, take that step again. Consciously brush aside any other concerns. Do what’s in your power. Refuse to […]
Hidden within and behind all that you see changing around you dwells a timeless, changeless order of being; our eyes but half-seeing, we perceive only the outline of life, and not what truly Lives…
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about how an authentic struggle is necessary in order to realize the flowering of the goodness that is seeded within us.
All creations are subject to the laws that govern and maintain the greater cycles of life. Active gives way to passive, passive heralds a return to activity; all must be reconciled and then start again. Learning to observe, recognize, and […]
All that is moves through and expresses itself in cycles. Think of the seasons: each spring there is a stirring, the promise of a birth yet to come; we see, revealed before us, the appearance of possibilities that were formerly […]
Whenever we place any form of mental or physical consolation—be this food, friends, religious icons, some foolish purchase—ahead of our need to realize the indwelling Divine, we may be assured of the following result: the only thing that will change […]
Life is equal opportunity for change …
Guy Finley shares that each of us is part of a goodness that is far beyond any belief that you will ever know. Truth transcends belief. Become a Realist and find the truth of the way things really are independent of conditioned thinking.
The truth is we can’t know what to do in advance of any given moment. When we meet life with preconceived ideas about how to respond to what unfolds before us—we are like downhill skiers trying to know when and […]
Real life is not static. Its only rule is change; so, it should be clear: either we agree to participate in the process of this eternal renewal, or we will feel punished by it. This means it’s impossible to be […]
The longer any illusion is taken to be real, the less illusory it seems to be.
Guy Finley explains that instead of being disappointed when others don’t live up to your expectations, you can use their manifestations to remind you of your own wish and work to properly fulfill the purpose of your existence.
The following easy exercise will help you escape the circle of wants and to realize the truly new and unexpected life. Each day, make it a point to spend some time in a natural setting. Never mind that you “don’t […]
Each desire for some spiritual grace creates the expectation of the desired. If you can see the truth of this, then you are also able to see these next two vital discoveries: First, this same expectation effectively keeps you from […]
We have all had those moments in our lives where something unexpected came to us and, pouring itself in, left us breathless… perhaps as simple as rounding a bend and catching sight of a distant, breathtaking vista, or just being […]
Most of us, on a day-to-day basis, go through life carried along by a constant stream of expectations. In fact, these expectations are so common to our sense of self and its well-being that we barely even realize we have them […]
Measure the degree of your resistance to unwanted moments, and you also know the extent to which you’ve forgotten who you really are… and the true purpose of (your) life.
We have all felt the calming effect of a kind of unity when we stand on the ocean’s shore, and gaze out on its endless waters. In moments like these our relationship with the ocean is a meditative one; the […]
Question: What can I do with all the energy I feel surging through me when life does not go my way? Can you illustrate what it means to “bear the moment”? Answer: Yes. The energy you’re describing, the onslaught of […]
The thing that is unwanted in any moment is not the event we blame for our pain. The real source of our suffering is mechanically identifying with a negative reaction, and then unconsciously resisting our own dark state. In other […]
Question: I want to grow spiritually, but somehow I have to move beyond justifying my weaknesses if I’m ever going to learn the lessons meant for me. How do I stop justifying the messes I’ve made in my life? Answer: […]
Guy Finley tells us that that until we get tired of living from the negativity we’ve accepted in our lives we will push away any new possibilities. But just starting to doubt this “certainty” is the first step out of the prison of […]
What is the denial of anything, of any moment in life but an unseen agreement to live in servitude to one’s lower self. This, and all degrees of unconscious resistance, represents a blind and immediate obedience to the parts of […]
Question: When I look at myself, it seems that my most prevalent emotion is anger. It’s always there. I frequently find myself caught up in what you call “mental movies,” remembering all the cruelty and unfairness that seem to justify […]
We rarely see how, or when we act against ourselves – or others – because of how instantly, easily we agree to identify with a legion of sleep-inducing thoughts and feelings that appear to serve one purpose: to justify a […]
There’s only one way to realize the perfect sense of safety and unshakable contentment that comes with quietly knowing you’re first on God’s “list” . . . And that’s to remember, at all times, your wish (and the work) it […]
In this brief audio clip, bestselling author Guy Finley says that we experience unnecessary pain in this life because we value the wrong things.
Question: Where do we look for the power we need to be happy and safe? Answer: Look for this power not in a person, place, possession, idea, or belief, but through the new understanding that your higher, permanent nature needs […]

Of this you may be assured: There is a struggle for your Heart between powers in places High and low. Your safety and secret strength in this contest is that neither kingdom can claim this coveted Gift (of yours) without […]
The power to change our past only becomes a possibility for us as we awaken to find ourselves no longer able to make any excuses for what we have been, or for being what we are in the present moment… […]
Guy Finley reveals that we never suspect that the part within that wants to condemn us is the same as that which excuses what we did. Observe these two sides together and a powerful third force is awakened. This awareness […]
The only thing the excuses we make for ourselves actually do is to increase our dependency on them.
The longer we go on making excuses for the way we are, the shorter grows the amount of time between the events that compel us to devise them.
Welcome the five points that follow as friends along the way to a life free of self-defeat, for that is exactly what they are. 1. The more light we can put on those parts of us that tell us it’s […]
Only by our deliberate interior work to realize a world within and yet beyond our self do we make this glad discovery. . .
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about how real change in our exterior world begins with being in right relationship with what appears in our interior world. Nothing changes on this Earth that doesn’t have its beginning in Heaven.
We can teach others only by what we are. . .
Guy Finley explains that because children mainly learn from visual cues and emotional emanations, the best, most effective way to teach a child is by being a living example of the understanding you wish to impart.
Question: Should I help my children learn to have a quiet time (learn to watch their thoughts and be silent)? The four-year old is a little young; the seven-year old doesn’t want to do it. Should I just leave them […]
Question: I am 20 weeks pregnant. I’ve already felt the strong precious being inside of me. Especially when I am praying I feel the Spirit in my child. What words of direction can you give to me about being a […]
Question: I understand the nature of fear and how it feeds on itself, but I would like to know more about the right words and actions to be used when dealing with my child’s fear of the dark. I know […]
Only as each of us awakens to our actual condition in life, dominated as we are to one degree or another by a discontented self, can we ever hope to use our free will to give up our willfully discontented […]
In this short audio clip, Guy Finley talks about some of the characteristics of free will — the capacity to choose what we love — and the higher kind of responsibility that comes with that gift.
Whether you see it or not, this world is in the hands of the hand that is coming from beneath the earth. Just think of all the acts of will that are occurring as they never have occurred before on […]
We are tested not by Spiritual Light but in spiritual darkness . . . for what test is made amongst things revealed? . . . Our real inner worth is measured by what we turn to in moments concealed.
There is a will that operates twenty-four hours a day that is for you, and a will that operates twenty-four hours a day that is against you. You’re familiar with the will that works against you. It’s that will that […]
Real life never stops starting over, but before one can dwell in this this newness—and know its unencumbered freedom—one must let go of any and all attachments in the past that produce a painful sense of self. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about what it means to let go of something without needing to know beforehand the outcome of that sacrifice.
Distinct moments come along the upper path when it feels as if a dam has burst in one’s heart; wild waters of unknown emotions race into and through the canyons and once-sealed chambers of consciousness, washing clean all that has […]
Your immortal Self is fearless because it lives for one reason only: to be the unflagging instrument—moment to moment—of whatever love asks it to be. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
There are three ways to get what one wants from life: industry, cunning, or love. Industry is good but at best conditional, for it is subject to the passage and ravages of time. The “crafty” inevitably trap themselves. Love, on […]
Give yourself freely to what you are given to see, and you cannot fail to reach and realize the innermost source of yourself. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about a spiritual paradox: that our level of freedom in this world is determined by how willing we are to be commanded by a “higher will” that is already perfect in its goodness […]
The love we have for anything holy, beautiful, or true is present in our heart before we can think of any reason for the love that we feel. This means it isn’t us who find things to love, but rather […]
. . . No one finds the true upper way without true guidance. And yet, on the other hand, seemingly in direct opposition to all we have learned so far, there is this beautiful fact of life . . . Within […]
Great uncertainty surrounds the whole idea of self-realization. When it comes to the possibility of being in conscious relationship with what is divine—of discovering your immortal Self—what everyone wants to know is “how?” From that point it seems the confusion […]
We are never closer to realizing the next level of our own higher possibilities than when, by the light of a new awareness, we see some old darkness within us and then agree that we can no longer […]
In this brief audio clip, Guy Finley talks about how the perfection of any quality within ourselves must always begin with what we are in the present moment.
Just as a ship lost at sea must make a course correction if it hopes to reach a safe harbor, so must the aspirant be willing to be corrected by life for there to be any hope of sighting heaven’s […]
The highest and only lasting form of self-fulfillment is found through the completion of the moment itself and not in whatever one might try to extract and then capitalize on out of its appearance. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
Like a flower that emerges from rocky soil only on a fully moonlit night, truth appears—and its fragrance enriches whomever waits nearby. Then suddenly, just as it appears on no appointed schedule, it disappears again; only silence marks the empty […]
Once living within the limits of what is known is also realized as being the limitation of your spiritual possibilities, then there is no recourse other than to depart the safety of all that you have been in favor of […]
Guy Finley explains that as you strive for perfection you will reach, necessarily so, the point of limitation where the self that is striving can go no further. But that point needn’t be feared, because the fear that you feel […]
Your heart needs space to soar. Your mind needs places without walls to wander and time by itself to see its own reflection. Give them this gift, and they will bring back to you the freedom they find, filled to […]
The sorrow and emptiness of any self-centered existence springs from ignorance of the immortal Self; it is to live from a compulsive and fearful nature that can never quite satisfy its hunger for more, regardless the cost to all who […]
If you serve only yourself, you serve nothing. If you cling only to yourself, you hold nothing. If you hunger for the approval of others, you starve for nothing. If you wish to please only yourself, you please nothing. If […]
Remember that your one true responsibility in life—the one action that will always see to your success in life—is to always be as awake and receptive to the present moment as you can be. If we refuse to see what […]
Guy Finley talks about how true greatness does not need to be acknowledged as being great. It has nothing whatsoever to do with receiving the approval of others, nor of comparing ourselves to others in any way. In fact, greatness […]
Honesty heals; lies hurt. In these four words live all one needs to know and practice—that is, assuming one wishes to be whole, harmless, loving, and true. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
If there is one essential characteristic or element most needed to ensure the success of those who seek the immortal Self, it is self-honesty. Without true integrity—from the inside out—it is impossible for the aspirant to come into a conscious, […]
A reporter who had a deep and personal interest in higher spiritual matters heard of a certain teacher of truth who was held in high repute. But what caught the reporter’s attention more than anything else was that this modern-day […]
So many people today are bitter, broken-hearted, or just plain angry because of what happened to them while growing up. The reasons for their resentment or regret are as countless as are the number of unconscious people who unknowingly create […]
Guy Finley explains that the question in every spiritual aspirant’s mind is, “When will I be free?” To know the answer, first you must awaken entirely to what it is that enslaves you.
Who you really are—your immortal Self—doesn’t live in the past, and therefore cannot be punished by anything that happened there. If anything, the repeated pain of reliving whatever the problems may have been should show us that we’ve arrived in […]
So many people today are bitter, broken-hearted, or just plain angry because of what happened to them while growing up. The reasons for their resentment or regret are as countless as are the number of unconscious people who unknowingly create […]
You cannot do the work of starting life over and be busy reliving your past at the same time. Being new is a deliberate choice: it is an act of alignment that places you in conscious contact with a living […]
No one can say no to this world who is afraid to walk through it alone. The unseen cost of this baseless fear is not just ending up in the company of cowards but that one may lose the possibility […]
Guy explains that when you wrestle with the world to try to get the things you think will make you happy, you are fighting the wrong battle. When you finally understand that happiness can’t be won from this world, you […]
Billions give their lives away for a moment’s pleasure or the promise of approval. They sacrifice their happiness in the hope that by acquiring power they can make their world a prettier place in the face of all the ugliness […]
If common social convention—with all its contrivance and hypocrisy—has one redeeming value, it is this: the happy day may come when we realize that too much of our time has been spent conversing with cleverly disguised thieves, listening to and […]
To weigh the value of what this world can reward us with, we need only remove the scales from our eyes, for were we willing to measure how many times we have fallen victim to a world that promises us […]
Whether to persist and aspire to the Higher or drop into some dark despair, that is the question; and which of these two seeds flowers all depends on which one you choose to nourish and grow . . .
Guy Finley explains that within us exists both an affirming force that drives our wish to connect with the world above us, as well as a denying force that wants to keep us rooted in the desires of this world. […]
If you’ll persist with your sincere wish for higher learning, you can’t help but succeed. Persistence always prevails because part of its power is to hold you in place until either the world lines up with your wish or you […]
The pitfalls along the upper path leading to the realization of the immortal Self are well marked by the aspiring souls who have gone before us. Their legacy of spiritual insights and revelations serves as signposts along the way for […]
Once we realize that what makes any moment seem impassable is nothing other than our own resistance to what it asks of us, nothing remains impossible. Everything eventually yields to the one who persists. www.YourImmortalSelf.com
Nothing infuriates evil as much as being seen for what it is . . .
Guy Finley explains that we have lost our innate ability to discern what’s good from what’s evil, and instead make peace with anything that promises to reconcile a disturbance within us. But you can’t have your own life when something […]
There is nothing to do, only something to see . . . Blind reactions based on an incomplete understanding of your circumstances always sow the seeds of yet other unwanted moments yet to come. Everything you “do” in this manner […]
On this one point all saints, sages, and illumined beings agree: there is nothing as certain as silence, stillness, and solitude to introduce you to the divinity within. The first step in learning to be still isn’t really an action […]
Your true self is a creative silence, a ground of perfect stillness from which all disturbances appear and to which they return if left alone. The clearer this revelation becomes, the more confident you become that being still is the […]
We cannot separate the problems of this world—including the pain endured in agreeing to honor, respect, and support those we love—from the awakening of a patience and kindness that can be born in us no other way.
Guy Finley reveals and explains the four words that will always aid you and those around you in any stressful family situation.
The only way we begin to act as a true force of healing in the lives of others is when, at last, we cease to hurt ourselves.
Here’s a simple but ultimately very self-liberating action to take if you wish to reduce the amount of stress and anxiety that you feel in the company of others, friends, or family: Choose to be more interested in quietly discovering […]
When it comes to healing mental or emotional pain, the first step to freeing oneself is in seeing the following facts: resistance to anything (including psychological pain) is a secret form of fascination with it, and to be fascinated with […]
Learn to see and to use the presence of any psychological pain as an invitation to reprioritize your present values. . .
Guy explains that every time we are identified with a negative state that is judgment day. We are judged, but not in a punishing sense. We are actually invited to see where we have acted from an imbalanced state.
Whatever we try to go around in ourselves guarantees it will come around again, which is why the things we fear in life and about ourselves always tend to reappear. Here’s the law that governs this relationship: whatever we resist […]
It’s a little-known secret that our experience of life in any given moment is a direct reflection of what we actually value in that same moment. We may deny this unsettling truth, but when it comes to what we are […]
The main reason we suffer or feel bad about ourselves or our current circumstances isn’t because conditions in our lives have the power to punish us—because they don’t. We suffer only from spiritual amnesia. We’ve forgotten that God, the Divine […]
There is a direct and proportionate relationship between the degree of inconsolable pain that we have and a deep-seated misunderstanding of our real purpose for being alive. . . www.YourImmortalSelf.com
Guy Finley explains the revelation of our true self is the natural outcome of a constant pruning away of the illusions we have about our own character.
When our attention is drawn to how much we don’t want to be what we are in any given moment, we can’t see ourselves as we actually are! This means that all forms of resistance-born reactions are blinding agents; they […]
The real reason that we believe in any public performance—be it that of some well-known star or our own friends and loved ones—is that we are all, to one extent or another, actors on a stage. It’s not too far […]
Our need to change—to be made new—is constant; however, so is our resistance to change. The former is inseparable from the freedom it heralds, while the latter ensures the continuation of patterns that imprison the soul. Choose the latter and […]
The great journey leading to the immortal Self does not begin with fact but in faith untested. It is the journey of faith alone that reveals the fact of the Divine, much as a flower proves the unseen seed from […]
When the soul cries out to spirit to carry her to a new world beyond the boundaries of this earthly domain, she is calling for the winds of faith to sweep down, fill her tattered and empty sails, and take […]
Within each of us already lives a higher order of being, an immortal spirit that neither time nor circumstance can cause to end. *** Seated at the center of each of us lies buried a kind of celestial seed, buried […]
In times of great upheaval, if you will only agree to let go and die to yourself, it won’t be you who passes. So that not only will you bear witness to the sacrifice of yourself, but you will also […]
Rebirth is made possible because something dies to ensure it. In this eternal law of life hides a new understanding, a great key that many have sought but only few have ever found. As we are about to see, it […]
Since the nature of real life is genesis itself—the ceaseless rebirth of “what has been” giving way to “what is and will be”—this alone tells you that you have the power to change. www.YourImmortalSelf.com

In order to nurture our own awakening, we must first see the need to let go of those parts of us that we sense no longer serve us. This new kind of self-awareness is the interior “seed state” needed to […]
One of the gifts of being human is that our individual potential far exceeds the boundaries of our (animal) body, which, like all natural creations, must serve the general laws it’s been created to obey. We have the possibility of […]
Just as winter yields to the onset of spring, as surely does the moon submit to the sun, so too are we created to give ourselves to that Greater Life that alone can make us evergreen and fill us with […]
The pain in any unwanted revelation about our present level of self is being created by an unseen part of that same low level of self now being revealed…
Guy Finley explains that the nature that pursues a pleasure in order to be rid of a pain exploits the soul for its own end. When you finally start to see that your usual solutions to your pain don’t work, […]
Everything points to the existence of a timeless interior Presence that doesn’t just precede the relationships we are drawn to in our lives but actually serves to arrange them, including whatever life lessons we take from these encounters. Calling on […]
In one sense, the interior journey that leads to the immortal Self is demanding and difficult, even seemingly impossible at times; and yet, as paradoxical as it seems, there is nothing intrinsically hard about rising above ourselves and slipping into […]
There is no reward on earth, or even amongst the stars, equal to the realization of the divinity within you. Those who have awakened and attained this pearl of great value understand—with no sense of pride for their knowledge—that the […]

The way our present nature looks at life around us — as well as everything appearing to move within it — is through our five senses. This means that as we are, the sum of our relationship with the world […]
I can think of no greater encouragement in this life than the self-evident truth that within each of us dwells something Extraordinary. By “Extraordinary” I don’t mean any one condition or sensation born of a particularly exciting experience or even […]
The reason most people never come to know a true relationship with the divine is because this perfect union is born in the consciousness of their helplessness, nourished by their poverty and matured in their humility.
Guy Finley explains that there is a wave of love that alone has the capacity to wash away everything that causes you to be sad and angry. But you must ride it, be in its waters, and allow it to […]
The next time you experience any kind of pain, you can do something that will turn it into a new and different experience. Each time you catch a pain, admit that you don’t understand it. You thought you did. You […]

Before we can know a happiness beyond the reach of conflict or sorrow, we must ourselves be whole; for any happiness apart from self-wholeness is only half a happiness and must, in time, prove itself so.
Guy explains that in order for the spirit to make its home in a human being, it must enter into all their parts to reveal, heal, and unite them. If only one part of you is involved, the rest is […]

Question: I know I have a confused and divided mind, so how can I get it into self-wholeness? Answer: Just as an electric fan cannot sort papers on a desk, giving them order, neither can the whirling mind produce Peace. […]
It is in the acceptance of life as it is — as it is given to us in each moment — that we find the wholeness, the holiness that is the one true center of this storm called “life.”
The main reason we must always remember to hold our chin up whenever negative thoughts try to drag us down is because whichever direction we choose first in that moment is what the rest of us will follow…
Guy Finley tells a fun and insightful story about an “achy lake” that was disturbed by the nuts that the squirrels kept dropping into it, to illustrate that you can use all of the disruptive people in your life to […]

Question: In my job I must deal daily with several emotionally dark coworkers. What can I do to handle this situation better, besides getting another job? Answer: I know that it is difficult to be surrounded by toxic people; however, […]

Guy Finley explains that the grand movement of life itself is a ceaseless rebalancing. But because the native state of every living organism is inertia, when life produces the conditions it needs to make itself complete and whole we find […]
Question: Is it easier to grow spiritually if one is naturally “emotional,” that is having easier access to one’s feelings? Answer: We are each according to type “centered” in certain centers in us. Some are more emotional, some are more […]
Nothing seems harder to accept than the fact that we are responsible for so much of what proves to be unnecessary suffering. But we must challenge this involuntary, often intractable refusal to consider such ideas. The truth is that we […]
We are not made by that Great Intelligence that balances whole star systems, to suffer from the conflict that arises from an unbalanced understanding of our own essential nature! This is why if we ever wish to gain conscious control […]
Our true responsibility as caregivers is to lead by example… by living up to our own spiritual potential.
Guy Finley responds to a question about the spiritual potential of autistic children, and reveals that the true responsibility of a caregiver is to first live up to their own potential.
Question: Any thoughts on what is a good way to share my spiritual work with my kids? Answer: Be as consciously kind as you can be, which means to not express (but watch instead) your negative states. Be as encouraging […]
Question: The more I think I know about true spirituality, the more I become easily aggravated by the behavior of others when I hear them make an obviously false (spiritually) statement, or I observe their inconsistent behavior. I sense that […]
Question: My father has had cancer for about two years. Neither of us talk about dying. When a nurse asked him about dying, he said he was afraid he wouldn’t go to heaven. I would like to help in some […]
Stress, anxiety, and tension are the dark jewels adorning a thorny crown we must wear whenever we try to live more than one moment at a time…
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about the importance of being present to ourselves, especially when the mind seeks to identify with something so that it can feel disturbed.
Sooner put out a fire with jet fuel than gain the upper hand on some anxious state by throwing more agitated thoughts into its turmoil.
Your awareness of troubled thoughts and feelings roaming through you is the power that keeps their harmful and self-limiting influences from having control over you. Their aim is to get you to define yourself by identifying with their dark and […]
The next time (and every time) you catch some negative thought or feeling that says, “I am anxious,” “I am scared,” “I am mad,” or “I am in so much pain” — the first thing to do is to come […]
To live in Presence is the path to peace…
Guy talks about the importance of being present to ourselves at all times, especially as the unattended mind creates false purposes for itself which can only lead to pain.
Question: I have been doing great at ridding myself of false purpose, but can’t yet seem to find my real purpose. The careers I might be interested in are all out of my reach. Any comment? Answer: Be patient and […]
It’s impossible to separate a false purpose in life from the pain that it produces.
In one way, it’s hard to say what has happened to the health of our world and the people upon it, not that suitable terms don’t exist. The problem is that whatever picture one paints with words, it points only […]
The habitual assumption that life’s answer to our request to realize a New Life is going to be “No,” effectively ensures that our wish will not be granted! Any part of our being that unhappily assumes something negative will happen […]
Guy Finley explains that a true spiritual aspirant is someone who works to “make it real” because he or she has seen the futility of deflecting life through pretense and imagination.
Here for your consideration is a very common but false belief about what one must do or be in order to transcend the limitations in his or her life. Study this closely. See how its unquestioned, socially accepted convention serves […]
Most of us at least sense that whenever we fall into despair, lose our temper, or relive some past painful regret, we have lost possession of ourselves. To some extent we know that negative states limit our freedom because, in […]
Life is always new, which means there is no such thing as an “old” problem. The only thing aged in us, with regards to what continues to make us ache, is our worn out ideas about how to overcome our […]
We are not created to spend our lives in fearful preparation over what may come — but rather to use whatever comes our way, each moment, to help us perfect our understanding that God is good…
In this short talk, Guy Finley describes what it takes to let go and let a higher intelligence reconcile the sense of dissatisfaction we feel in our lives.
As life pours itself out in the stream of passing time, and we run into challenges seemingly greater than our ability to answer — each of these encounters “asks” this question of us: “Are you willing to change (who you […]
In those moments when we meet a challenge that stands in our way, we are not meeting some immovable, transient object. In reality, we are meeting nothing more than our own present understanding of that event. Wherever we are — […]
Question: When quieting my mind, there is sometimes a feeling of peace and clarity in the present moment, but often there is this gloomy, dark feeling of emptiness, together with a sense of fear about the future making me feel […]
Anywhere light shines, darkness submits…
In this short talk, Guy Finley explains how we cannot fail if we will persevere through our darkest moments, because the light never fails to illuminate what presently hides in the dark.
We have an essential need to be at peace. Part of that essential need to be at peace is to know that we are in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing, and to know it […]
The secret purpose of that self-loathing nature in us – that wants us to suffer today for what we could not do yesterday – is not there to help us make straight our mistakes, but rather to ensure that we […]
