Made it a little over a minute in and had to turn it off. This kind of thing just makes me want to kick people in the head. Which is pretty self-absorbed.

He used multi-syllabic words. This is a problem, as he seems to not actually know what they mean.

OK, I completely agree with the first 20 seconds or so – I have long lamented the fact that I walk into a voting booth knowing the candidates and issues, and knowing that the person in the next booth could be flipping a coin or just voting a party-line ballot.

BUT, my solution would be to change the voting system – imagine your ballot consisting of two columns – column A lists every office up for election from President of the U.S. to city council member, column B lists every candidate for those offices in no particular order. As long as you match the candidate you are voting for to the correct office, the vote counts – simple, elegant, and requires the voter to maybe do a little homework before walking into the booth.

That being said – the only dictatorship I might consider is the one that names ME as the dictator, until then, I’ll continue working with our flawed little system.

I think he’s forgetting about much of world history when the “Faithful” ran much of the world–the Catholic Church. That didn’t work so well either.

There are people like this already in government– they are called the Republican Religious Right.

BTW, if this guy actually had his way, the majority of the most educated people in this country wouldn’t be allowed to vote while toothless inbred hicks in a “red” state would (I say that as a Texan).

Disgusting.

Oh! And I wonder how the theocratic “benevolent dictatorship” has worked out in Iran?

I had to shut it off a minute into it because I didn’t appreciate the message it was leading into – at all. Plus, our very impressionable two year old son is nearby – and I sincerely don’t even need that playing in the background eeking into his mind.

Messages like this are unfortunate. People who spread them are even more unfortunate. All I can think of doing is making sure I am on the ball in instilling in my son’s mind an ability to think about what is right (not what he thinks may be right) – and keep walking out my life doing just that in example.

Adolescent preoccupation with self-absorption. Such as forcing your own narrow-minded beliefs upon the populace “for their own good”. Karl Marx called, and he wants his ideas back.

You know what’s great? The absolute disdain that so many Christians have for non-Christians. We don’t just want to convert you–we want to eliminate you. I can’t begin to describe the shame I feel that I used to think exactly like this.

Interesting video for a New Zealander to watch…I agree with his ‘rights’ spiel. If you’re having sex before marriage there are no rights that come with getting pregnant, only responsibilities of becoming a parent and privileges of good medical care and family support.

You have heard we don’t have universal health care here, right? Includes no care for many pregnant women and children. And chronic condions like diabetics, asthmatics, hypertension, cancer, etc. And what should be quick to treat infections and injuries. Doesn’t matter if you’re having sex or not

Family support? I wish. This place is huge. People often live far away from family. We have FB and Skyp, but that doesn’t give you family dinners, warm houses, babysitters, understanding, etc

Oh and our family leave policies are abysmal. My boss, who lives in Canada, even said so to me when we discussed my going on maternity leave in late March (in his office, employees can take off up to a year because that’s required by law – but here in the USA, not so much). Luckily, my husband works in local government so we have very good health care. But I am only eligible for 12 weeks off work and my workplace absolutely forbids bringing children (I work in an office).

I would love to balance my work and family life – but the scales are tipped very heavily towards “work, work, work or you’re fired.” And I’m a married adult – not exactly the kind of person you’d want to “punish” for having a child (though, honestly, anyone who views having children as a punishment for sex seems more than a little distasteful to me…)

Me too. If I didn’t have student loans to pay I would honestly consider quitting and then finding something else later – but for the most part I really like my job and I would like to be able to pick up with that when I was ready to work again….in about a year, not 12 weeks.

For all the lip service that gets paid to “working families” I have seen very little come out of it.

That can also be paternity leave or split 50/50 between the parents. Canada may have it’s downsides but it seems from yesterdays SOTU address Obama is getting on board with stuff we’ve been doing for a while – good to hear.

Maybe it’s just me but I vote for the economic and general social/environment etc policies of a government, not about their position on “morality” or the “maintainence of culture.” In the end jobs, stability, decreased military presence, education and sustainability of resources are vastly more important to me and the overall health of the country than who marries who etc.

this the Plato’s Republic for jesus.

Plato calls his “christian dictator” a “philosopher king” for all the same reasons.

yet of all the city states that survived the growth of greece, Athens and it’s democracy (a greek word) has been most enduring and least likely to melt into civil war. at least in the western world…

I’m frightened that there are people that think like this. Not in some far off country, not in the 1300s, but here. In the United States of America. Where we have 15/20 of the best universities in the world. This. Is. Fucking. Scary.

On second thought, let’s have a Christian Dictator and party like it’s 1099! After all, Cortes did FABULOUS things to advance Mexican society. And what about Richelieu’s total respect for the rights of Frenchmen? Or say the Tudor’s treatment of their fellow Christians (wait… are Protestants Christian?) Or Martin Luther! Sure he didn’t have a lot of power but there was one particular group he didn’t like the most… someone used his writings. Recently too. Tiny mustache. Funny accent. German I think. Really inspirational fellow.
