On one of our mission trips to Nicaragua, someone on the team we were working with thought that this would be a great movie to show to the (Nicaraguan) teens on youth night. After about 5 minutes, i decided that the best job for me was to do something other than to help supervise youth night. What do you call something that is both terribly cheesy and horribly wretched at the same time? That, I suppose would be a word for this film. :)

Sending eternity with John Hagee would be hell.

That has to be the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. And to think, I used to believe that bunch of garbage. Thank God for Jesus!

So you don’t believe in a literal Hell?
I am not at all saying you are wrong, I am just asking how you view all the scripture that covers it. I would love you know your perspective on it, or anyone’s for that matter if you don’t believe in a literal Hell.

On the other hand, do people really go to Hell just for choosing to watch football over John Hagee’s sermons?
The problem is not disbelieving in Hell, but for those who believe to take it so frivolously that one goes there for trivial causes.

This should help a little. One thing to keep in mind when appealing to scripture is that it isn’t supposed to fit together seamlessly. The authors wrote what they wrote for their own reasons, in their own times, for their people. This was later grouped together by a bunch of other men and translated into English. Go back to the original Greek and Hebrew and you won’t find the hell fundies talk about.

For me, it’s not so much about whether I believe in a literal hell. It is about whether fear of hell is really a powerful motivator in leading people to be fully devoted disciples of Christ. In some evangelical circles, there seems to be too much emphasis on fear of punishment (hell) and/or promise of reward (“heaven”), both of which come after we die, and not enough emphasis on the life that God calls for us to live here and now.

I agree Joel. The first coupe times I “prayed the prayer” I was using salvation as a Get Out Of Hell Free Card. I absolutely hate Fire and Brimstone sermons, they let fear dictate a person’s decision far to easily!

I find it interesting that in trying to hard to convince people of something like eternal damnation that they render if nearly unbelievable and ridiculous
