By Amy & Nancy Harrington, Pop Culture Passionistas This week a cartoon saved a young girl’s life, Hannah Montana granted 30 wishes, a tycoon ran in a charitable marathon, and one rock star helped a homeless man while another fought bravely for his own life. Here are this week’s most inspirational moments in pop culture.Spongebob Saves a Young Long Island GirlThis week on Long Island a young girl was choking on her gum, when a classmate performed the Heimlich maneuver. Allyson Golden accidentally inhaled her gum while her music class was sharing a good joke. She couldn’t breathe and started turning purple. Her friend, Miriam Starobin, recalled an episode of the popular cartoon “SpongeBob Squarepants” where the famous yellow sponge saved his friend Squidward from choking on his clarinet. Without hesitation, the heroic Starobin employed the same movement as the cartoon character and saved her friend’s life.A spokesperson from SpongeBob’s network, Nickelodeon, told Newsday, “We are happy that SpongeBob could be such a positive help.”And they say TV is bad for you!Miley Cyrus Makes Wishes Come TrueMiley Cyrus performed Thursday at the Grove in Los Angeles, California, on World Wish Day, the 30th anniversary of the Make-A-Wish foundation. 30 kids from across the states had wished to meet Miley and so the 19-year-old sensation sang a song for them at the Hollywood shopping center to kick off the festivities. The Hannah Montana star sang “The Climb” with lyrics that seemed appropriate for the occasion, “There’s always gonna be an uphill battle…ain’t about what’s on the other side. It’s the climb.” Miley has her own charity called Get Your Good On and encouraged everyone in the audience to find something they are passionate about and do good for someone else. She said, “I’m so excited to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation celebrate World Wish Day and give these 30 brave kids an incredible wish experience I hope they’ll never forget. It’s a privilege for me to make their wishes come true and get my good on in such a heartfelt way.”Richard Branson Leads Celebs in UK Marathon for CharityBritish billionaire Sir Richard Branson can take just about any mode of high-end transportation he likes. That would include nabbing first class seats on his own airlines, Virgin, and taking his whole family on the impending maiden flight of his spacecraft, Galactic. And yet, earlier this week, the mogul and some of his friends decided to go for a run instead, participating in the London Marathon, which was sponsored by Virgin. Richard’s team included British TV personality Jenni Falconer and singer Natalie Imbruglia. The team raised money for the charity Virgin Unite.Among the other celebs to make the 26.2-mile trek for charity was Princess Beatrice–the first member of the royal family to ever participate in the marathon. Master chef Gordon Ramsey also competed but failed to finish the race despite the fact that he’s run marathons before. Apparently he felt he didn’t need to work off all those Beef Welly’s his “Hell’s Kitchen” cooks are always making.Always a generous sole, Branson gave back to the charitable as well. For every $5 donation, those who paid it forward were given a chance to win a trip to Necker Island. Not that Sir Richard had to cough up any extra change to pay for the prize–he just happens to own the 74-acre property.Ozzy Osbourne Gives from the Neck Most people can’t even manage to reach in their pockets for a dollar or two when a homeless person asks them for a little help. Well, Ozzy Osbourne has put them all to shame. Earlier this week in Los Angeles, Ozzy was approached by a man who asked him for a little change. Instead, the former Black Sabbath lead singer pulled a $4,500 crucifix necklace off his neck and handed it to the man. Onlookers report that Osbourne told him to pray with it and that the recipient of the gracious gift was incredibly grateful. Of course, $4,500 is the equivalent to sparing a dime for most of us when you consider that Ozzy and his wife, Sharon, are worth an estimated $170 million. Still, people might think twice the next time they want to call Ozzy the Prince of Darkness.Bret Michaels Set to Rock AgainIt was a touch and go week for Poison, “Rock of Love,” and “Celebrity Apprentice” fans everywhere. Singer and reality TV star, Bret Michaels, suffered a brain hemorrhage, just a few days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The news was bleak and confusing for a while. Bret was talking, he wasn’t, doctors couldn’t find the source of the bleeding, on and on. But now there’s some very positive news. Not only are there reports that doctors are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery, but there’s also word is that the hard rocker is going to resume his tour on May 26– hopefully keeping the head banging to a minimum. What’s been really great in the midst of all the medical drama over the 47-year-old rock star’s health, was the outpouring of support from fans. Websites, Facebook, and Twitter accounts were flooded with so many well wishes and kind words for Bret it would warm even the most jaded superstar’s heart.
