Is Jon Gosselin Now Jewish?

posted by dross

jonandkategosselinforic.jpgWhen Dad-of-the-Year Jon Gosselin of “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ started dating Hailey Glassman a few months ago, I don’t think many of us (and by “us” I mean fans of the show, people who read tabloids, and/or those in the media forced to actually pay attention to what’s going on with the Gosselin family) expected him to take an active role in her faith life. I don’t think many of us even stopped to think about whether she even had an active faith life or was in some way a practicing Jew. I didn’t. So it came as somewhat of a shock to hear Gosselin talk about participating in Jewish holidays with Glassman and her family, occasionally keeping Kosher, and professing his love for challah bread in this interview with

I just went through Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur and learned about the new year and every Friday is the Shabbat dinner. I love challah bread. I’m learning about Jewish food, going to Zabar’s. I love that place. I’m learning about kosher and when not to order a bacon, egg and cheese and make an ass of myself. Hailey makes fun of me. My mom came to the city on Yom Kippur and asked where all the traffic was. I got from the West Side to Midtown in five minutes. She wants to come to the city every year on Yom Kippur.

Gosselin also mentioned he’s spoken to Beliefnet blogger Rabbi Shumuley Boteach, hinting that he may have had questions about the religion.

I talked to Rabbi Shmuley a couple of times. He has nine kids. I was really nervous dating a Jewish girl. She’s like the best girl ever. All my friends are like ‘I’m so jealous’ and I’m like, ‘Stay away, she’s mine.’ She’s the rock of my life. She’s been through hell in the tabloids. They made up lies that she’s a lesbian and she’s doing drugs. We’ve both been through all this turmoil. And we just keep on loving each other.

For me, the real interest is whether Jon was ever really the devout Christian that he claimed to be back when he and Kate were together. I mean the whole (allegedly) cheating on Kate thing was an indicator that he probably wasn’t. But the couple did speak about their Christian faith on the show on a number of occasions, Kate wrote about it in her book “Multiple Blessings” (and spoke about it with me during a Beliefnet interview earlier this year), and they have also made money speaking at churches about their faith. Although they used to have a section of their website with information on their church speaking engagements, that section is no longer there. However, they still do have an area with devotionals.
I’ve also felt that part of the reason why so many people were interested in Jon and Kate’s break-up was because they did profess to be a strong Christian family, and as such, one would imagine they would have done a bit more to save their marriage.
So what do you think? Was Jon genuine about his Christian faith on the show? Or was that just to capture the faith-based audience? Do you think he’ll eventually “officially” convert to Judaism? And, if you’re Jewish, do you even want him to?

I think that Jon Gosselin is a follower – he tends to follow the person he is with. I’m not sure that he was ever a devout Christian but Kate was raised in a Christian family and Jon basically ‘went along with the flow’. Now that he is dating a Jewish girl he is being influenced by her faith. Whatever path he ultimately chooses I hope that he is able to connect with God – he sorely needs our Father’s influence in his life.

Jon and Kate both have turned this into a media circus. Both love the attention. Kate bashes the paparazzi but it’s the paparazzi that have made her famous. Neither one puts the kids first. Can you imagine down the road when the kids are old enough to understand and will be able to see just how their parents treated each other in front of the whole world?
I will never forget the episode where they were shopping at Toys R US at Christmas and she yelled at him in front of all the customers. She treated him horribly. She did not treat him with respect, at least the godly respect God tells married couples to show one another. They did not show godly behavior on the show.
Neither one showed Christian behavior. Of course I can’t judge their hearts, only Christ knows if they truly are saved.
I do not think they cared that much about their faith because if you live it everyone should know.
I am not Jewish…..but why should anyone care if Jon became a Jew? What right does anyone have to prohibit someone from having a particular faith? If Jon converts simply because his partner is of another faith, IMO its a sell out. Faith comes from the heart, it’s an internal thing. You can’t love Christ one minute, kick Him to the curb the next minute because the person your dating is not of that faith. I would doubt that person ever was saved and loved Christ.
I do not watch the show anymore.
My heart goes out to the children because this has quickly become the War of the Gosselins.

It amazes me that so many so-called Christians will sit on the internet all day and judge these two people.
“Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins”.
“Do not grumble, brethren, against one another, that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the doors.”

  • Bubbles

I agree with Nan. Jon is a follower. And frankly, from this interview it sounds like he’s infatuated with people that he hasn’t even known very long. In the Parentdish article he says, “I only care what they think.” What?! Jon should work on figuring out what HE thinks. And did he say that his lawyer and his therapist are from the same family? LOL To guard your privacy, your therapist should be somebody nobody else knows. And they are not your “family” or your extended “family.” They are professionals, and you are paying for a service. Jon isn’t as savvy as he thinks he is.

  • pagansister

In the end, who really cares what Jon or Kate, for that matter, does with their lives? The few shows I saw Kate treated him with no respect. The ones who are the victims here are the children. They have been (and still are being) used to make money…how many thousands do they get for allowing cameras to follow their daily lives. That’s living?
As to Jon converting? Not a big deal. Whatever gets it for him.

  • wow

I think Jon will look great in a yamaka. It will hide the bald spot. Give me a break. What a follower he is. I thought he was going to start standing up for himself and not being a follower of others.

  • jana

It seems to me that when someone converts from Christianity to Judiasm, they aren’t really Christian to begin with. He might be joining Judiasm as a way to gain a new identity and instant family.

Every person has their own faith journey with periods of questioning and doubts. Being exposed to another religion, especially in a romantic situation, can lead to thoughts of embracing the loved one’s faith. One may think they are making a clear headed decision, but it’s not. Most people feel comfortable for the long hall worshiping the way they were raised. It’s just more comfortable and comforting, evoking the spiritual experience with its particular combination of language, prayers, music, etc. People also feel more comfortable watching their children raised in the same faith they were nurtured in. It’s a big decision and one that should NOT be made in order to make someone else happy, unless they won’t care if you change your mind later. Good luck. Pray about it.

  • Jamie

I’m Jewish, and I would cry if Jon Gosselin converted to my religion. Ew.

  • CC

I am so glad you brought this up since I have been wondering the same myself. Where are all the Christian Tshirts now? He is smoking and drinking and running around…not what a commited Christian in his right mind would do. Everyone can fail but he made lifestyle changes. I think he is so easily led due to his lack of backbone and his phlegmatic personality that whatever seems good at the moment is what he believes. He is obviously very childish and has been listening to some very bad counsel. The Christian faith is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. Christianity embraces the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In other words the same God as the Jews. In order to become a Jew one renounces his faith in Jesus Christ. If he can do that the obvious question is was he ever really a Christian? Only he can answer that but his actions certainly point to the answer being NO. Jon Gosselin is so head over heels in lust with Hailey that he has lost his ability to think clearly. He went from one form of codependency to another. Poor guy, hope he really does wake up and look in the mirror before he does any more damage to himself or his precious children. If you are a person of faith, consider praying for this family, they sure need it.

  • Glenn

So many times I have heard folks claim to be Christian, probably because their family used to take them occasionally to church. Being a Christian involves so much more that just walking into a church. I think this man is having a very difficult time in his life right now and he is very confused and maybe clueless about what and/or who he is. Calling oneself a Christian involves actually committing to Jesus body soul and mind. I have never met a Christian that either could or would just decide one day to “convert” to any other way, least of all Judaism or Islam. Those that would do that were NEVER really anything close to being a Christian at all. I hope this man finds what he is looking for because his very public life seems to be out of control at the moment.

  • Thelma Matthews

I say…Judge not…lest you be judged. How can one person know the depths of another persons soul. I would say this is all between him and GOD.

  • linda

It is a big step from christianity to Judism. I am in love with a Jewish man but have never considered the change. It just shows the lack of deepth of his commitments to important commitments….like his marriage and now his faith.

  • Erlinda Barton

We as Body of Believers do need to pray for the Gosselin’s family.
That they will know the TRUTH-which is the Word of God-THE HOLY BIBLE.
    Eternal Life…Only One Way
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.

I think since this fiascoe started Jon has been looking for something to call his own. Kate was the powerhouse and Jon second hand, I am by no way giving Jon acalaides, but I may not have been as vocal, but through my darkest times, I went shopping for something to heal the wounds that were so deep. Some of my searches weren’t too smart either and looked for Religion to heal, it takes awhile, we should not feed his pain because he will never heal and just maybe Judism is Jon’s answer. Who are we to judge what God sends to help an individual – it may be stupidity to our standards or it may be a religion. I think there is more wrong with our society than with Jon and Kate, we seem to be drawn to watching the pain of a young family with ten beautiful souls.

  • Your Name

Firat, Jon needs to pray about his relationship with Kate before he ventures into another relationship and another faith. It is obvious that he is a very confused and hurt man. Regardless of what,he needs to pray and stay with his Christian faith to help him at this time. Switching to another faith rather Jewish or whatever faith will not help him sort out what has happen to his marriage and why. At this time, the smart thing is to remain with his Christian faith and have marriage counseling sessions with Kate. This is the time to look to his Christian faith. Changing a faith is not the answer. Is he a true Christian? Time will tell.

  • Jean Richwein

When it comes to commitments, Jon seems to blow with the prevailing winds of his own urges.

  • Elizabeth

I think that even if Jon did cheat it does not mean that he wasn’t a Christian, we are all sinners. The fact that he is embracing another religion is wonderful. It is my belief that the only way to be a true Christian is to educate yourself in the beliefs of others, if it leads you back to Christianity then it is because it was YOUR free choice. So then…many should ask themselves are you a Christian because someone put fear in you of the other religions or is it because you actually sought them out, educated yourself and decided on your own with the guidance of the Holy Spirit? It is a JOURNEY and Jon is on his journey. The jewish aren’t stealing Jon…God has a plan for Jon and Jon is following his heart which is what many of us should do. There will be pain, we will fall, but its all about God helping us back up and us growing from that.
Was Jon genuine about his Christian faith on the show? I believe that he thought he was, but only God knows the truth.
Or was that just to capture the faith-based audience? Even if he was not gunuine…we are all learning something from watching their experience and God WILL work it into HIS purpose :o)
Do you think he’ll eventually “officially” convert to Judaism? I hope he follows his heart and trust the holy spirit to guide him for what is right in HIS life.

  • EJ

I think Jon is taking a beating by everybody. I don’t think Kate is innocent in the situation. I do think they are christians. But I feel we are all sinners at times.I think Jon will find his way back.Kate is the one who filed for divorce so why isn’t it questioned about her faith? It seems to me she didn’t want to work it out.I pray that for the childrens sake they can work something out to at least be civil to each other.GOD will help Jon with his decision.Sometimes we just don’t get it at first but GOD never gives up on us.I came from a split family & my dad made fun of my Mother & us for going to church.Guess what! Years down the road my dad became ill & my Pastor visited & prayed with him & later that week his new wife called & cussed me out because she said my dad got upset that the pastor visited. My pastor said my dad seemed glad he did. Anyway a few years later my dad actually accepted Christ in his life.We never did get to get our relationship back which is sad.I just hope & pray that both Jon & Kate pray hard & get their lives together before they loose the relationships with the children.

  • Francesca

I don’t know anything about the beliefs that the Gosselin’s have, but,I do know that,in spite of their situation, their children need to have some stability in their lives. It’s not fair if the children have no stability of any kind, and, they need adults in their lives who have strong stability and strong faith in their own lives.

  • undefined

I think Jon is not roote3d in either Faith. Seem s to be the shallow mustard seed that blows to the convenient area and never takes a deep root. Many do later find solid footing an d are not swayed.

  • Charm

It seems to me that the Gosselin’s are still of the same faith. They worship the almighty dollar.

  • gnavarro

I think that if we are Christians or follow any type of religion that we should just worry about our own lives and let others live their own! I believe that the world would be a much better place if people would stop judging others and mind their own business! after all what is the sense in worrying about other peoples problems and their personal lives if we can’t help them in any positive way. criticism unless asked for is not helpful it is just an intrusion in ones personal life..

  • june

Someone should tell Jon that the food doesn’t make the Jew…your beliefs do. As a Christian you accept Jesus as your savior where as in the Jewish faith you do not accept the beliefs of Jesus! Jon is making himself look like an idiot and no rabbi worth his salt would convert him. You don’t become a Jew just for the bagels and lox Jon, and to break down one’s beliefs to being a follower to make people happy once again you are insulting not only “A people”, your family and yourself! GROW UP!
