If you are trying to lose weight and be healthy, being conscious and mindful of your diet (what you can eat), and being thankful to God can really help.

Before eating, take a few moments to be silent.  While sitting at the table in front of the plateful of food you’re about to eat, just close your eyes, take a deep breath and let your thoughts take a break.  If you are with others, invite them to join you or do it quietly by yourself.  (In many years of silent prayer before eating, no one has ever not joined me!)

Focus your attention on your breathing for three rounds of inhalations and exhalations.  Rest your attention on your diaphragm and lungs going in and out, up and down.  This is an ancient introductory method of meditation and mindfulness that is extremely simple, but highly powerful.

Next, you might want to say a little prayer, either aloud or silently to yourself.  “God, thank you,” might be a good one.  Or, “I am enough,” or, “I have enough.”

Put all worries and anxieties aside before each meal.  Hand then over to your Higher Power, or to God (as you feel spiritually connected and comfortable).

It’s very important to take that silent gratitude and stillness back to the table and to your meal.  Take another deep breath as you open your eyes and look at the food.  Let what’s on your plate be completely enough.  Chew each bite slowly and consciously, and carry that little one or two-word prayer with you in your every bite and breath.
