Pope Benedict has always struck me as being the typical academic male (although it’s more common among scientists and engineers than theologians). He might notice if he looks particular snazzy (because he’s very very smart). He will never notice when he looks like a dork (because it’s so very very unimportant). So it’s mighty convenient (for him) that he picked a profession that has a uniform! ;-)

Il Pappa meets Babe Ruth.
A wide-brimmed straw hat is about the only thing that will work with the white cassock. It would look tropical and cool.

I know I ought to agree with Gerard, and in principle I do, but there is also something very endearing about the baseball cap.

Margaret,
I’m in agreement with you. There is something endearing about the cap. It’s very similar to the beloved and wise uncle, grandfather, or professor whose virtues create the room for unique wardrobe expressions. They not only get a pass, but the unique expression is seen as part of the gentle ad loving demeanor itself.
Ciao!
