The Birth of Mary

“The Birth of the Virgin Mary” by Esteban Murillo (Louvre, Paris)

Father of mercy,
give your people help and strength from heaven.
The birth of the Virgin Mary’s Son
was the dawn of our salvation.
May this celebration of her birthday
bring us closer to lasting peace.
Grant this though our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Okay, I'm stupid. What is a "collect."

The Collect prayer is now called the "opening prayer". It, along with the Post-Communion prayer, really set the tone the Mass. We don't pray for just grace in general, but for these specific needs. I'd say real "active participation" at Mass requires being attentive to these prayers.

It's the opening prayer of mass. There's a good explanation of its use in Catholic liturgy, and elsewhere, here. Dcn. G.
