Daily Inspiration: Wipe the Slate Clean

Caryn can’t stand her. Her mother-in-law is one tough cookie. She’s the Queen Bee, she rules the roost, and her son (Caryn’s husband Ron) adores her.  This problem needs solving.

Queen Bee claimed dibs on the “day of” slot to celebrate Ron’s birthday. But Caryn had made reservations at Ron’s favorite steakhouse for a romantic dinner for two. She decided to take a stand. Enough of changing plans and accommodating her mother-in-law. Caryn gave Ron an ultimatum: Your birthday, pick one: me or your Mom.

While relating the story to a girlfriend, cooler heads prevailed. Her friend was able to convince Caryn to give her husband the best birthday gift of all; compromise.

It wasn’t easy to change her mind set.  But Caryn shifted her steely determination from “what I want” to “what others want.” Before long she began making decisions from a different perspective: One with compassion and understanding.

Is there somebody who you’re just a little ticked off at? A person who rubs you the wrong way or doesn’t live up to your standards? Wipe the slate clean. What a fine example you’ll set by living your faith with forgiveness and compromise.

Prayer for Compromise

Dear God,
Make me an example of what can happen
when faith is lived through fresh starts.
Change my mindset from "What I want" to
"what others want."
Remind me not to judge.
Remind me to forgive.
Remind me to forget.
Praised are You Lord,
God who champions compromise.
