The Dirty Dozen: Food to Avoid in the Produce Aisle
Understand What "Organic" Really Means
Fruits and vegetables that are grown organically are supposed to be free of synthetic additives like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, dyes, industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering. However, it's hard to say for sure that additives aren't present in organic produce. Growing conditions can be affected by contamination from neighboring non-organic farms. Even an innocent bird can spoil the purity of organic crops by leaving droppings with banned substances in the water supply.
