Rachel Laser on Keeping Gun Violence in the National Conversation
Two U.S. senators said they have reached a bipartisan deal to expand background checks at gun shows and for online purchases, as the Senate is set to begin its debate on gun control. The compromise is a step forward in combatting gun violence, says Rachel Laser, deputy director of Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. “The faith community has played a tremendous role in driving the gun violence prevention debate across history, particularly since the Newtown shooting,” Laser said. “We know that it’s our moral responsibility to ensure that the momentum does not die down.”

Faith Leaders Unite Around Combatting Gun Violence
Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, a coalition of religious leaders representing 40 faith groups, announced Tuesday that it will fight for the passage of legislation to ban automatic weapons and ammunition magazines, beef up background checks and criminalize gun trafficking on the federal level. On Wednesday, after President Obama announced that he would fight for gun control reforms and signed executive orders to increase enforcement of existing gun regulations, the group responded positively. "We believe Congress has a moral imperative to enact the life saving measures proposed by the President and Vice President,” said Vincent DeMarco, national coordinator of the group.
