Why It’s Actually Not So Bad:
Most kids love to say banned words. So let them – in the bathroom. Set aside a space (their bedroom, the bathroom) where any words are welcome. Then the next time your child spouts an inappropriate word (whether it’s “dummy” “poop” or something worse) tell her “You can say that word as much as you want – in the bathroom.” The illicit thrill disappears and kids learn boundaries about what’s OK and what’s not.
Keep it Appropriate: If you’re hearing racist slurs or other deeply offensive words, it’s time to look further. Check out the company she’s keeping; it could be a sign of danger.
