U.S. Army Col.(ret.) Van Barfoot defiantly unfurls the Stars and Stripes from a 20-foot pole in Sussex, Virginia. A national hero and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, Barfoot was told by his neighborhood homeowners association that the pole violated local standards. Barfoot flew the flag anyway -- saying there was nothing in the local rules against his patriotic act ... and even if there was, he'd do it anyway! In the face of scathing national scorn, the association backed down and Barfoot continued flying his flag daily until his death in 2012.
