What’s often called a Mexican wedding cookie is also called a Greek wedding cookie and an Italian one as well. These are all the same shortbread ball made from almonds, brandy and confectioner’s sugar. They are round for life without end, buttery rich for prosperity, often scented with clove for a touch of bitterness and rolled in powdered sugar for extra sweetness. The German wedding cookie is also made from buttery, almond rich, clove scented shortbread, but the dough is rolled and cut into hearts that are sugar iced, then pierced on the left side to create a hole through which a real knot of bridal veil can be tied.
