Fervent, loving intercession

Alupoaicei continues: Yes, God loves you for who you are. Even more important, He loves you because of who He is. The Bible says that God is love in its purest form, and He cannot defy His own nature (1 John 4:8; 2 Timothy 2:13). Growing up in the church, I’d always been taught that God loves us in spite of who we are. The doctrine of His love had always been offset by the idea that we’re all just sinners deserving of hell and, let’s be honest: God loves us grudgingly and offers us grace despite the fact that we’re such terrible people. But that’s not unconditional love, my friends. That’s conditional love. And conditional love is not really love at all.

After giving birth to Evan, five short months later my husband and I discovered that we were expecting another baby! We welcomed a baby girl, Eden Grace, on September 9, 2010. After Eden’s birth, I struggled to help Evan with his development while also nursing and caring for a newborn. My faith in God literally kept me alive during that time; His Spirit in me empowered me to get out of bed every day and function (somewhat) normally. Often I got only a few hours of sleep in a week. I remember telling a friend, “I should NOT be operating a motor vehicle!” But I had absolutely no one to help me. In addition to struggling with the mind-numbing exhaustion and sleep deprivation of caring for two babies, I also wrestled with loneliness, isolation and postpartum depression.

Slowly, God helped me regain my sense of joy and optimism as I relearned how to be grateful and find new ways to express my love for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I had to learn to act on my faith rather than on my feelings. He spoke His Word powerfully into my life and taught me to speak and claim His promises: No weapon that is formed against you will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

His promises are so wonderful: Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life… (Philippians 2:14-16). If God is for us, who can be against us?... Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:31-37).
