My grandparents loved to have family and neighbors over to eat. ‘Have more to eat…’ and ‘I will make you a plate to take back with you.’ Even if the visit was supposed to be brief, usually a cup coffee and butter cookies followed. Holidays were a big event. Sometimes relatives shuffled in-between houses to stop by for desert and pick on leftovers. If it was Christmas, there was always a ham, baked ziti, or a turkey. Making an effort to connect was a passion for my grandparents. When it came to their later years, neighbor and family showed their love in return.
