Is training all that necessary? Absolutely. But the key is not to just show up with a chainsaw or a pickup full of bandages. If you want to volunteer at the disaster scene, first contact either the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army for direction. Three other agencies that train volunteers, then send them to disaster sites are the Southern Baptist Relief Services, the United Methodist Committee on Relief and Samaritan’s Purse.
