When Your Life Is On Fire
When the actor Alan Alda was facing a possibly fatal illness while on location in a remote Chilean village. “I was a few hours this side of dead” he told me, but also observed that for all the uncertainty “I was surprised at how calm I felt.” He dictated a letter to his wife and kids, and went on to face the music. When he survived, he was delighted to have been give what he called “a free life” and also to realize that “when push comes to shove,” he knew he “could accept what’s what.”
Alan Alda and Jamie Farr in MASH taken in 1977.
