The Life of George H.W. Bush
A Thousand Points of Light
While running for president in 1988, George H.W. Bush popularized the phrase “a thousand points of light.” He used it as a poetic reference to all the volunteer organizations and clubs in America that sparkle like stars in the sky. It became an image to mark his presidency and political philosophy. In 1990, he spearheaded creation of the Points of Light Foundation, which sought to foster private, non-governmental solutions to social problems. Bush served as honorary chairman of the foundation, which has been renamed “Points of Light."
