This was a time when certain topics were just not polite. On TV's "Leave It to Beaver," June and Ward Cleaver, slept in separate beds and the family bathroom had no commode. On The Brady Bunch, the words "sex" or "puberty" were never uttered. Women whose breasts were removed because of cancer kept it to themselves. “There were a lot of women like me having this done,” Wiersma told journalist Sue Thoms of Michigan’s MLive website, “but we didn’t talk.” Victims were diminished in their femininity – half a woman, ashamed.
