Congress had chosen Michigan Republican Congressman Gerald Ford to fill Agnew’s vacancy, knowing that Nixon’s resignation was imminent.  For the first time in 200 years, America would have an appointed, unelected Commander-in-Chief – a Congressional designee, a caretaker until elections could be held.  And now, the interim executive’s wife was stricken with cancer.
