End of the world forecasts come and go. The question everyone wonders, "Is the end of the world near?"

Throughout history, various seers, psychics and false prophets have predicted when all time will cease, the world will be obliterated and the righteous will be snatched away into heaven.

Christians have a major problem with such forecasts – Jesus said even He didn’t know the date or hour when the Almighty would draw history to a close.

Over the course of history, there have been a number of theologians, philosophers and religious figures who've predicted the end of the world was near. From the digital world sabotaging everything to massive comets creating another Big Bang, every theory has been presented and publicized. Here are 25 of the more fascinating doomsday predictions over the last 2,000 years.

Incidentally, a couple of the seers insisted that their forecasts were completely valid ... and you and I just weren't paying good enough attention and ... we missed it! However, there are other occurrences that were perpetuated on theory after theory – and the spoiler alert is that the question of ‘Is the end of the world near?’ continues to exist.

500 A.D.

Sextus Julius Africanus was a Christian traveler and historian of the late second and early third centuries. He is important and was considered very popular because of his influence on Eusebius, on all the later writers of Church history among the Church Fathers, and on the whole Greek school of chroniclers.

Africanus -- writing in the early 220s -- used Chaldean, Judaic and Egyptian history with Greek mythology and Christianity in his five-volume Chronographiai. The work covers the period from Creation to the year AD 221. He calculated the period between Creation and Jesus as 5500 years, placing the Incarnation on the first day of AM 5501.

In it, he proclaimed the Second Coming of Jesus would happen by 500 A.D.

1970s

Moses David (formerly David Berg), founder of the hippie-type Children of God, predicts that a comet will hit the earth in the mid-1970s and destroy the United States.

Moses David is the founder and leader of the new religious movement originally called Teens for Christ, then later The Children of Go. Presently it is now called The Family International. Berg founded this movement in 1968 among the counterculture youth in Southern California. Moses David came from a long line of non-conformist ministers and evangelists, and he also decided to spend his life dedicated to Christian service. Initially the group was filled with hippies and unchurched youth, but later drew in followers from many other places. This is when the Children of God expanded and became known as the Family International. To communicate with his followers, he began writing letters, and continued this practice for 30 years. However, his legacy has a lot of controversy because he was accused multiple times of child abuse and sexual misconduct, even from his grandsons.

1981

Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church and Korean religious leader, predicts that the Kingdom of Heaven will be established this year, with himself as leader. Incidentally, he also proclaimed himself the Messiah, saying that Adam and Jesus had failed, so it was up to him to save mankind.

Moon’s religious views were constantly a topic of conversation. He believed that God is viewed as the creator, whose nature combines both masculinity and femininity, and is the source of all truth, beauty, and goodness. Human beings and the universe reflect God's personality, nature, and purpose.Give-and-take action" and "subject and object position" were "key interpretive concepts and the self is designed to be God's object. Overall, Moon believed the purpose of human existence is to return joy to God. The "four-position foundation" is "another important and interpretive concept and partly explains the emphasis on the family.
