Pope Francis: The Contradictory Pontiff
On March 19, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was inaugurated as Pope Francis. At 76, he was not a leading candidate for the papacy, but his humility and optimism have been earning accolades. The new pope has also been raising eyebrows with his ascetic lifestyle and down-to-earth manner.
Pope Francis is the first pope from the Western Hemisphere, the first Jesuit pope, the first pope to take the name Francis, and the first pope to ask for prayers from the people before he blessed them. The Catholic community is eagerly expecting the unexpected from this new Bishop of Rome.
