Small continues: University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Andrew Newberg located our experience of spirituality in the parietal and frontal lobes of the brain. Dr. Newberg performed SPECT brain scans on Buddhist monks and Christian nuns and found that during the Buddhists’ meditations (when the monks entered a state of ego dissolution) and the Christians’ prayers (when the nuns connected deeply with the Holy Spirit), their brains produced remarkably similar scans. As different as their religions were, the same neurological mechanisms mediated their religious experiences.
